Making the decision to change careers can be a daunting task, but for many, it can also be an exciting opportunity for growth and new challenges. I hope sharing my story will add value to others looking to change careers whether it's in Real Estate Investing or in another industry.
First and foremost, it's important to understand that transitioning from technology to real estate investing requires a significant amount of learning and education. Real estate investing is a complex field that involves understanding market trends, regulations, and financial analysis. It was essential that I took the time to educate myself on the industry before making the leap.?
One of the best ways I got started was immersing myself in books and articles about real estate investing. There is a plethora of resources available online and in print that provide a solid foundation of real estate investing knowledge. Additionally, many real estate courses and programs are available both online and in-person (mostly online for me) that provide the hands-on training and experience needed to succeed. BiggerPockets, ORAAT, Grant Cardone were my go to for up to date real estate news, books, articles, and training. Every morning before work and every night before I slept I would binge about Real Estate Investing like it was the latest season of Stranger Things. It was and still is an obsession.
In addition to learning about the industry, I started to develop a network of contacts in the real estate investing community. This included real estate agents, property managers, contractors, and other investors in the DFW area where I planned to invest. Building a strong network not only provided valuable resources and support, but it also helped me stay up-to-date on market trends and opportunities in Texas.?

Another important aspect of transitioning to real estate investing was understanding the financial side of the industry. Real estate investing can be a great way to build wealth, but doesn't come without risks. It's important to have a solid understanding of cash flow, return on investment, and other financial metrics before making any investment decisions.?
It is essential to have a clear plan and set of goals in place when transitioning to a new career. Goals helped me stay focused and motivated as I navigated the learning curve and built my new career in real estate investing. Making the transition from technology to real estate investing can be challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. With the right education, network, and mindset, you can succeed in this exciting and dynamic field.
Lastly, know that Real Estate Investing is a people business; working with contractors and real estate agents provides business for them and employment for them and their colleagues. Investing and putting up the capital to renovate dilapidated properties allows the community to flourish. The responsibility of renting a safe and affordable home where people can make memories or raise a family gives me joy and gives my new career purpose. Being open and sharing the knowledge and what I learned (wins or losses) with business partners or with others just interested, is a blessing. These are my “why(s).” I hope you find your why and your purpose in the career you are in, or plan to pursue!
