How TradeConnex Is Supporting R U OK? Day: Insights from Veretis

TradeConnex is proud to support R U OK? Day, a national initiative aimed at encouraging meaningful conversations to help people struggling with mental health.?

As part of this effort, we’ve partnered with Veretis, our performance psychologist, to ensure our team has the knowledge and tools to support one another effectively. We’re sharing some key learnings from Veretis to help you start the conversation and make a positive impact.

Why R U OK? Day Matters

R U OK? Day is not just a one-day event. It’s a reminder that mental health conversations should be ongoing. With approximately 8.6 people taking their lives every day in Australia, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it’s crucial to foster supportive environments where people feel safe to open up.

At TradeConnex, we are committed to integrating these principles into our daily interactions, and we hope you’ll join us in this important effort.

How to Ask "R U OK?" the Right Way

Veretis recommends starting the conversation with genuine care and open-ended questions.

Here are the four steps to asking R U OK?:

  1. Ask R U OK? – Be relaxed and show that you are genuinely interested in their well-being.
  2. Listen with an open mind – Let them share without judgement. Active listening is key.
  3. Encourage action – Ask questions like, “What have you done in the past about this?” Offer support and suggest they reach out to a professional if needed.
  4. Check in – Follow up with them to show that you care and are there for support.

By following these steps, you can foster a safe space where people feel comfortable sharing their struggles.

Fighting Stigma in the Workplace

A key takeaway from Veretis is the importance of fighting mental health stigma in the workplace. Stigma can be self-imposed, structural, or public, and each type can significantly impact an individual’s willingness to seek help.

Here’s how to reduce stigma:

  • Be an ally – Show support for colleagues by listening with empathy and advocating for mental health resources.
  • Address stigmatising behaviour – If you notice negative language or behaviour, address it constructively and use it as an opportunity to educate.
  • Provide resources – Share information about mental health programs such as Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) to ensure people know where to get help.

Creating a supportive and inclusive environment can make a big difference in reducing stigma and promoting mental well-being at work.

The Role of Leaders on R U OK? Day

Leaders play a critical role in setting the tone for mental health conversations in the workplace. Veretis emphasises the importance of modelling healthy behaviours and encouraging work-life balance.

Here are a few ways leaders can support their teams:

  • Promote work-life balance – Encourage your team to disconnect during personal time and practise flexible work arrangements when possible.
  • Prioritise self-care – Take regular breaks, both physically and mentally, to sustain productivity. Encourage your team to do the same.
  • Create an open environment – Foster a culture where mental health conversations are welcomed and respected.

By leading by example, managers can show their teams that mental health matters.

Conclusion

R U OK? Day offers a powerful opportunity to spark meaningful conversations and make a lasting impact. Through our partnership with Veretis , TradeConnex is committed to supporting our team’s mental health not just on R U OK? Day but every day.

By asking, listening, and checking in, we can all play a role in reducing stigma and promoting a mentally healthy workplace.

Let’s make sure we take the time to ask, “R U OK?” and create a culture where mental health conversations are part of our everyday lives.
