How Toxic Is Your Washing Machine?

Dirty laundry?

You may not realize this, but even after you wash your clothes, the bedding, the towels and washcloths and even the babies’ diapers, they may be more toxic than before you laundered them. Imagine, all that time and money invested into doing the laundry, and everything is more contaminated than when you put them in the washing machine.

I am certain that you have heard that your toilet, your kitchen sink and even your bathtub and shower are breeding ground for bacteria and a cesspool for a multitude of germs and creepy microbial. It's absolutely true, but perhaps you never considered adding your washing machine and clothes dryer to that cesspool category. Are you under the impression your laundry is actually clean, and safe?

This may come as a total shock to you, but more than likely your freshly laundered cloths, sheets, pillow cases, towels and the baby’s stuffed animal are even dirtier and more toxic after you wash them. This is because experts have discovered that your washing machine and your clothes dryer are actually breeding grounds for bacteria, even candida, that multiply even with all the detergents and hot water you use. These dangerous bacteria multiply, then contaminate your garments, your bedding and the children's clothes, then contaminate you, your family and even your guests and pets.

Underwear and diapers are the biggest source of contamination, and spreading bacteria, yeast, fungus and microbial-causing infectious disease and allergies. Obviously because of microscopic bacteria from the fecal matter, blood, vaginal discharge, candida and urine present in the laundry,  billions of bacteria can actually multiply many times and spread to everything in the washing machine even with all the the hot water and detergent.

Dr. Charles Gerba a professor at the University of Arizona has conducted a very extensive conclusive bit of research on super bugs and bacteria that thrive and multiply in our washing machine and clothes dryers. For example Dr. Gerba discovered that an average load of just underwear will leave about 100 million E. coli in the washing machine to contaminate your next load of laundry.

An amazing fact that I expanded on in my book; "Save Money On Toilet Paper With Clean Poop", a fact that I gleaned from Dr. Gerba's research: "... There is an invisible approximate tenth of a gram of fecal matter on each underwear garment." And as expanded in my book, it's not necessarily visible to the eye, and may not be because of poor hygiene habits or not wiping thoroughly, we humans pass gas many times every day, and even in our sleep, and with the gas comes other nasty microbes.

Fecal matter, even a tenth of a gram, can carry millions of germs, different ones including hepatitis A virus, norovirus, rotavirus, salmonella, E. coli, candida, parasites and a multitude of fungi. Now, consider a wash load of ten panties and boxer shorts, your wash now has contamination of a full gram of fecal matter with perhaps billions of unhealthy microbial that will thrive and possibly mutate in that toxic environment into super bugs.

Dr. Phillip Tiero, a professor of microbiology and pathology at New York University School of Medicine, and author of the book: "The Secret Life of Germs", said: "...bacteria from the skin, such as staphylococcus can be found in clothing, towels and bedding that survive the washing machine."

The detergents, the bleach and the hot water are not the solution, nor the answer. And actually, may be part of the equation to building an army of super mutated bacteria.

We have all heard the slick sales pitches of the laundry detergent ads, and it's obvious the information on the packaging is geared to assure us that their chemical compound will meet our highest expectations of exceptional hygiene. But this is alarmingly nothing more than false assurances that your cloths and your bedding and your towels and even the baby’s diapers (if you are old fashioned and still use cloth diapers) are germ free. Actually, as the conclusive research of professors Tiero and Gerba prove, the opposite is true. The fact is, with all our efforts to kill the microscopic killers, we are actually building super bugs. The concept that plenty of hot water kills these germs is only partially true.

The problem is for one, the hot water we use actually causes unfavorable chemical reactions to the detergents, and hot water in and of itself is not effective unless the water is extremely hot. If your water in your washer is not hot enough to kill staphylococcus and many of the parasites that contribute to chronic illness, then for certain these bugs set up homestead within the fibers of your garments and bedding, and multiply there. And if you were capable of using hot enough water, think of boiling your cloths, then the life expectancy of the garments and bedding would be greatly reduced, yet the bugs would be eliminated. According to Dr. Tiero's research; "You need water that is between 140 to 150 degrees to kill germs."

Because I am a strong advocate of Biblical laws of diet, and of sanitation, I perhaps go to the extreme of exercising every precaution to keep a sanitized environment. This is also critical because many of our guests that visit us, or even come to stay in our home for our 21 day rejuvenation program, have serious health challenges, many have very compromised immune functions.

So to minimize potential contamination or cross contamination the hot water that comes out of every faucet in our house is 120 degrees. This is great for washing and rinsing all the dishes and cookware, and makes for excellent detoxing foot soaks and our popular soul bath. And before I learned that it was not sufficient to kill the microbial bacteria in the washing machine where clothing and bedding was exposed to these bugs, I thought the 120 degree water was sufficient. But then I discovered the technology we now use, and not one drop of hot water is used in our laundry. Just the energy savings alone would be sufficient reward for using this technology, but knowing that everything washed in the washing machine, the washing machine and the dryer itself, being completely germ free is assurance no one in our home is going to be exposed to bacteria, germs or even the chemical residues from laundry detergents. I will share more on this technology a little later.

Dr. Gerba goes as far as to recommend wearing surgical gloves when doing the laundry, and especially when removing wet laundry from the washer. According to Dr. Gerba; "...after handling wet clothes from the washer, especially if you are washing baby clothes or children's cloths, to thoroughly wash your hands."

But what about the bleach? Doesn't bleach kill germs and bacteria? Definitely, using the correct amount of bleach will greatly reduce or completely eliminate the population of these germs and bacteria. Bleach unfortunately is not always appropriate, colored cloths and sheets don't particularly like bleach. And when we do use bleach, following the recommended amounts on the bottles or packaging may be safe for not destroying the fiber and threads in the cloths and garments, but ineffective in killing all the microbial creatures. Dr. Tiero suggests; "You may want to use Clorox 2 or similar product that has peroxide."

These scientists suggest avoiding the use of the clothes dryer completely. This is certainly not a popular concept for the vast majority of modern day people, and actually not a practical idea based on living situations today. But proof is in the studies, the clothes dryer that uses an extraordinary amount of precious energy, is very ineffective in killing germs, bacteria and even yeast and fungus.

However, the power of the sun is a more certain way to kill these invisible killers. Just as all the generations before the 20th century air dried their laundry in the sunshine, it is still the very best option for today. And perhaps this time consuming labor of love paid off for all those generations because those folks back then had much less disease, and allergies, and none of the autoimmune syndromes or disease of today. I assure you, even in the 1950's, 70% of the population in the USA were not being pharmaceutically medicated for at least one chronic disease as they are today. Isn't it interesting that these brilliant scientists confirm that the powerful germ killing effectiveness of the sun is as essential to a healthy body as the power of the sun to stimulate vitamin D absorption in the body to prevent so many diseases?

Dr. Tiero explains that: "The ultraviolet radiation kills germs, and much more effectively than bleach." Yes, sun drying provides ultraviolet energy, and the benefits to the person hanging the cloths on the line in the sun, and then taking them off the line in the sun, benefits health wise from the exercise and the sun induced vitamin D. But we go back to the sad reality of a population living in the early 21st century, how many people are going to hang their panties and bed sheets on a cloths line in the sunshine? How many people under the age of 40 even know what a clothes line or a clothes pin is?

Your washer and your dryer can be the host to over 60,000 various germs, bacteria, virus, fungus and parasites. In addition to passing candida yeast infections from family member to family member, even some stains of STD's can survive the washing and machine drying, and actually linger in those appliances and multiply.

Detergents, laundry soaps and whiteners and brighteners, not to mention the no-cling dryer sheets, are in and of themselves very toxic time bombs. And when these combined chemical toxins are added to water and heat, the chemical reactions are compounded and the chemical gas off that is extremely hazardous and shortens the life of not just the people exposed to the toxins, but actually the health of our planet is radically compromised. And then there is the valid point, all this exposure to these chemicals shortens the life of the garments and bedding exposed to the chemical treatments.

Even the synthetic "fresh scent" of sun dried cloths is toxic, and although the commercials show a young mother and baby in a sunshine gentle breeze smelling the flowers, what you are smelling emitting from your pillow case can give you cancer! Now consider this, that synthetic "fresh scent" is masking the presence of perhaps millions of germs, bacteria and fungus that lurks in the chemically deodorized and fragranced bedding and cloths. Consumers buy the perversions of slick salesmanship, it's the nature of the beast, if I can convince you that a lie is truth by painting pretty pictures and enticing your sensory smell receptacles, then I have a loyal customer that will forever be paying me money all the while harming themselves, their families, their pets and all life on the planet. And all the while according to these dedicated scientists, the bacteria and harmful microbial continue to fortify and mutate into stronger enemies.

Detergents, laundry soaps, whiteners, brighteners, softeners, static cling free, deodorizers and sanitizers are indisputably in and of themselves toxic time bombs. When we combine any combination of these chemical laden formulations into our cloths laundering chemistry, unhealthy consequences do occur.

Dr. Mercola says regarding laundry detergents: "Typical laundry detergents may be imparting more on your clothing than a "fresh scent". Most all of them contain a slew of chemicals that leave residue behind in your washer and dryer, and on your clothing and your bedding, that can potentially be absorbed into your body via the skin and respiratory and sinuses. And not only are these chemical compounds evaporating into the air for you to breathe in, but anyone that enters your space." Frequently when my wife and I are out for a little daily exercise walking around our neighborhood, when passing a house we can tell that laundry is being done, the dryer exhaust vent is belching out the unmistakable fragrance of a synthetic perfumed dryer sheet.

Now think about this; you take action, and you follow the recommendation I am going to offer you to solve these issues, but like second hand tobacco smoke, you will have to contend with other people's bad choices of doing the laundry. So to pay it forward, you learn something powerfully good for you, your family and the planet, and in the spirit of love you share what you have learned and we create what is known as a healthy movement of awareness and positive action to eliminate or at minimum, minimize sickness and contaminations.

I know you have had the experience, you will not have to think about this too long to come to the same conclusions that I have. Most laundry detergents sold in your grocery stores, where your organic foods are also purchased, contain such toxic chemicals that you can smell them long before you decide to venture down that isle. It doesn't take a rocket scientist, or chemical engineer, to realize that anything that can leach out of those plastic bottles and space age packaging must be pretty darn powerful, and toxic. I have had patients so chemically sensitive that just going past that toxic isle they would all of a sudden experience ill effects with splitting headaches, nausea, or even for some, seizures.

Obviously, the vast majority of us are not chemists, nor chemical engineers, so reading the labels on the detergent bottles would be like trying to read ancient lost languages of Native Americans.

For example, common on almost all these laundry cleaning products is petroleum distillates (aka naphtha), which has been linked to various cancers, but why is it in my laundry soap? This component of rubber cement is also found in ice cream, and I haven't figured that one out either. But I am aware that the known and published side effects of exposure to this chemical include eye, nose and throat irritation, dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, nausea, dry cracked skin and swelling to name some of the most common potential side effects, but we still need to determine if our laundry or our ice cream needs this chemical.

Phenol is another common ingredient in your laundry detergent and for the life of me, I can find no common sense rational justification for this chemical assault on humanity. According to the United States National Institutes of Health; "Phenol is highly toxic and people who are hypersensitive to it could experience death." Wow, that is a fairly final and extreme potential side effect. There are a boat load of other potential side effects not as dramatic as death at very low exposures, such as damage to the central nervous system, the heart, blood vessels, lungs and kidneys. I don't know about you, but I think I would pass on exposure to any amount of phenol.

NPE, such a common low cost chemical compound used in the textile industry and the laundry detergent industry. This chemical compound has been nickednamed the "gender bender". Proven to be as much of an endocrine disruptor as the drug Ractopamine used to fatten up all non-organic factory farmed raised animals for meat consumption, that is proven to cause all sorts of heart disease, cancers and gender identity issues so that a boy thinks he is sexually attracted to other boys, or a girl is more likely to be a lesbian in sexual preference.

NPE is proven to be an estrogen mimicker, that does cause sexual hormone disruptions in all species. Other side effects include those known to exist in the Ractopamine drug, heart disease, cancers, kidney damage, liver damage, decreased testicular growth, reduced sperm count, depression and anger issues to name a few. NPE gained the "gender bender" nick name when it became obvious that washing machine discharged water was responsible for rainbow trout physically becoming part male and part female, and the NPE was linked as the positive culprit for causing this perversion of nature. Therefore, if you are a big meat eater, especially enjoying frequent fast food beef, pork and chicken, and you wash your cloths in hot water with brand name laundry detergents, you may have difficulty knowing if you should lead or follow on the dance floor.

The food industry and the laundry detergent industry have a lot in common, for instance, they are not required by any regulations in the United States to disclose or list their actual ingredients in their recipes. I assure you, McDonald's does not disclose that their factory farm raised sourced sausages and hamburgers and eggs may have been fed Ractopamine. And the laundry detergent manufacturers certainly do not always disclose the actual chemicals and synthetics they use. They get away with listing on the label something very vague and non-committal like; "Cleaning agents, anomic and nonionic surfactant's, buffering agents, stabilizers, brightening agents, fragrances...etc." and how the heck are we supposed to know what any of those are?

The artificial fragrances and synthetic perfumes used in laundry detergents and dryer sheets are so powerful they have been linked to horrible effects on fish and animals, so obviously they affect us in negative ways as well.

Phosphates, guaranteed to stimulate erratic growth of certain marine plants and bacteria and fungus can cause havoc on our entire eco system. How effective are these phosphates in increasing growth of bacteria and fungus growth in our washers and dryers?

The optical brighteners are not only toxic to fish and wild life, but definitely cause bacteria in your washer to mutate into even more toxic forms and cause allergic reactions in people. This would be a strong indication that these chemicals do have an influence on the immune system deficiency in humans.

Honestly, it should be no surprise to anyone with an ounce of common sense that Tide and just about every one of the commercial laundry detergents used in the vast majority of homes in the United States are banned in Europe.

Just as Europe completely bans the Ractopamine from all animal for meat production, obviously the cancer, heart disease, diabetes factor as well as the X and Y chromosome perversions that might explain the radical rise in homosexual population is not something the European nations want more of.

So, it's no surprise that the European EPA bans all US made laundry products. And the US EPA has no issues with looking the other way, and allowing the citizens to be poisoned for the sake of corporate profits? And I would assume, special lobbyists groups in Europe do not have the clout that lobbyists in the USA apparently have?

I am never one to focus on the problem, placing focus there would never direct us to real solutions.

Just as the laws of God can never provide a person salvation or a guarantee of eternal life, the laws are just a mirror to show us the healthy guidelines in which we should live, our moral responsibilities to experience healthy life style choices. Obviously, we are not perfect, and the mere fact we need laws illustrate we are imperfect and sometimes people violate the laws.

But the real freedom that will stimulate us to love those laws and adhere to them comes from the saving grace of God that gave us the hope of eternity that begins its journey at the foot of the cross of Christ Jesus, and the hope of His soon coming.

So, knowing those perfect laws of the Creator should tell us all that we should at all costs avoid toxic foods, and toxic chemicals as found in our laundry soaps as well as the body soaps, shampoos and conditioners we put on our bodies and our hair.  Obviously, the letter of the law, love, is not illustrated when we do things to harm ourselves, others, or the planet.

So, what is this great solution to the laundry issues that we discovered? This science supporting the complete effectiveness of this technology is so overwhelming. For many years now most commercial laundries found in hospitals, hotels and resorts and even in the military have been using this technology for a long time, and now it is available, affordably, for domestic use in our homes.

Never ever will you need laundry detergents in your washer. Never ever will you require hot water to clean and sanitize your laundry.

Can you imagine, actually doing all your laundry in cold water, with zero soaps and detergents? And you have the complete assurance that all your garments and your bed sheets will be completely clean, free of all bacteria, all odors and all the fungus, molds and germs that compromise our wellbeing. And at the same time, the washer, and the dryer if you still use it, will be completely free from any of the contaminations, being very sanitized.

Apparently several people have accessed the website, called Lake Industries, and ordered these awesome money saving and healthy alternative to conventional laundry washing. Problem is, the order taker neglected to ask where the persons learned about the machines, and being as ALL the profits from the sales goes to Children's Haven, the kids are the losers on this. If you have ordered a unit as a result of this article, would you please call Lake Industries back and tell them you learned of the incredible technology from Healthy Habits and want the sale credited to the Children's Haven? We all thank you for the extra effort! www.mychildrenshaven.org

It's absolutely awesome that so many people have contacted us and told us how amazed and happy they are with their new Platinum Ionic Laundry Purifier. When I ask each one who they bought it from, they replied; "Off the website link you provided". Awe shucks, another one of those situations where order takers don't bother to ask; "And, how did you learn of us, or hear about the product?" And unfortunately the Children's Haven has not made a dime, not even a penny off those sales! To credit the Children's Haven, please tell the order taker on the phone; "This sale was stimulated by the not-for-profit Children's Haven so they will pass on the very much needed funds to the kids. Thank you for your support, and please share www.mychildrenshaven.org with others.

Check your dishwasher also! Debris collects on the bottom and next to the rubber seal. That stuff gets recirculated at every wash and settles on your dishes and flatware!
