How to Totally Fail at Persuasion: Making the Common Mistakes

Introduction

When it comes to persuasion, there are a few common mistakes that people make. You might be making some of these errors without even realizing it.

In this newsletter, you’ll see the most common persuasion mistakes, so you can avoid them and become a more successful persuader.

The First Step to Failing at Persuasion Is. . .

The first step to failing at persuasion is to believe that it's a one-size-fits-all approach. You might be tempted to try the same persuasion techniques on everyone, regardless of their unique needs and preferences.

But as you know, this isn't how the real world works. Each person is different, and you need to treat them as such if you want to be successful in persuading them.

Another Way to Fail Is. . .

You might think that you need to use a certain set of techniques or methods to be successful at persuasion, but this isn't always the case. In fact, there are a few other ways to totally fail at persuasion.

One way is to use the wrong tone of voice. For example, if you sound too aggressive or demanding, people are likely to resist your arguments. Another common mistake is using too much or too little emotion in your speeches and presentations. If you come across as cold or unengaged, people will be less likely to trust you.

To be persuasive, you need to be genuine and connect with your audience. Make sure that your tone and emotions are in sync with what you're saying, and focus on building relationships with the people you're trying to persuade.

Another Failing Strategy Is. . .

Another failing strategy is to try to persuade your listener by using logical fallacies. This means trying to convince them with arguments that sound convincing, but are actually based on false premises. For example, you might try to argue that because something is popular, it must be good.

Or you might try to use scare tactics, such as warning your listener that unless they take your advice, they'll lose all their money. This is a particularly insidious form of persuasion, because it can be very difficult to refute. It's important to stay calm and logical when you're trying to persuade someone, and avoid using these types of arguments.

You're Also Sure to Fail if You. . .

You're also sure to fail if you try to use logical arguments or statistics to persuade your audience. While these can be convincing, they're often seen as cold and impersonal, which can make people less likely to trust you and more likely to resist your argument.

Likewise, bombarding your audience with too much information at once will only confuse them and make them less likely to take your point of view seriously. Try to keep your points clear and concise, and back them up with evidence that supports your argument.

Guaranteed to Not Work, Is. . .

There are a few persuasion techniques that are guaranteed to not work. For example, trying to guilt or intimidate your prospect is a big no-no. Another mistake is being too pushy or aggressive. And finally, one of the most common ways to fail at persuasion is by using logical fallacies in your arguments.

The Surest Way to Fail Is. . .

There are a few surefire ways to ruin your chances of persuading someone. One of the most common mistakes is using the wrong methods or techniques. For example, trying to use logic and reason to persuade someone who's not interested in hearing it won't get you very far.

Another mistake is being too pushy or aggressive. No one likes a know-it-all or someone who's always trying to force their opinion on others. And finally, failing to build a rapport with the person you're trying to persuade is a big mistake. People are more likely to listen to someone they trust and feel comfortable around.

Conclusion

Knowing how to persuasion is one thing, but actually putting it into practice is another. Unfortunately, a lot of people make common mistakes that end up sabotaging their chances of success.

If you're looking to learn how to persuasion but don't want to make the same mistakes as everyone else, be sure to avoid these three deadly sins of persuasion:

  1. Using the wrong methods or techniques
  2. Being too pushy or aggressive
  3. Failing to build trust or relationships

I don't want to persuade you but there may be some editing errors - or my dyslexia is playing up Persuasion seems to work better if the audience is amenable otherwise it can be like knocking on a wall instead of a door
