News junkies love the entertainment industry.
Earlier today, it was announced that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are planning to co-host Saturday Night Live on December 19th. We all remember this hilarious duo from the Weekend Update sketches from days gone by and they are coming back to co-host the show with Bruce Springsteen as their musical guest. How is this information going to grow your business, you ask? For most, we like to learn as much as we can about the unknown to be better prepared for the future. We also like to identify with things that bring us pleasure, such as humor and entertainment.
The American public is addicted to being "in the know" and your business can leverage this knowledge by delivering relevant content to news junkies while simultaneously introducing them to your brand. In fact, I'm doing this right now!
Take advantage of what's hot!
Just prior to writing this blog, I visited Google Trends. This tool tracks the keyword searches that are currently ranking in popularity. Once they hit this list, Google monitors the words over time to show how the word is trending. Below you can see that the number of people searching for information on Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Saturday Night Live increased significantly in the last few hours. As word of mouth spreads, more and more people sit down at their computers and the number of folks searching for these keywords skyrockets exponentially. If you act quickly and publish relavent content containing these keywords before the search volume reaches its peak, imagine the reach your marketing materials could have! What a great opportunity as a marketer.
Know your audience
The human desire to be "in the know" can be leveraged to increase the reach of your brand, but it needs to be done with caution. As one of those American news junkies myself, I am looking to learn as much as I can about current events but find myself annoyed when I'm blasted with advertisements for things I don't care about. Inundating the public with irrelavent information is just plain rude. So as you are thinking about using this methodology, be sure the content you are delivering is highly relevant to those who are going to be reading it. You can do so by making sure you know what content your current customers enjoy.
If your company's online presence is evolved to the point where it is being tracked through Google Analytics, you will be able to gain a good idea of what interests your website visitors engage with. Google tracks the activity of each individual user and develops a profile of your average user. As seen in the screen shot below, the visitors for this website exhibit an affinity for TV and movies, are news junkies and avid readers. Delivering content that matches their interests will insure you are treating your audience with respect and increases the chance that they will develop an interest in your company.
Deliver quality content at the right time
Now that you understand what makes your audience tick, you can review Google Trends to find trending keywords that match them to the content your company has to offer. Timing is of the utmost importance because the window of opportunity is short and you must be poised ready to deliver quickly. For this reason, I suggest having a portfolio of valuable content offerings to deliver. Some examples would include:
- Free download of educational content such as an eBook
- Whitepapers with real-life success stories
- Templates to guide through a process or for reporting and analysis
- Check-lists to stay organized
It takes some effort up front, but having an inventory of great content that you can deliver quickly can make all the difference! If this blog article has peaked your interest in creative and new ways to draw in an audience, you may be interested in downloading our free eBook.
