How TikTok is Bringing Families Together

As its been more than a month now where the entire world has been in lockdown, parents and family members are starting to reach their limits. Kids are driving their parents crazy, and everyone is feeling cooped up and restless inside.
That's one reason TikTok has seen a surge not only in downloads but also the amount of time people are spending on the app!
Tiktok is one of the ONLY social media apps that parents are using with their kids, co-creating content, siblings are working and playing together usin the app, and friends are still connecting even though physically distanced.
THE BOARD GAME OF THE FUTURE
TikTok is essentially the NEW BOARD GAME of the modern technology age. Its something you participate in and have fun! The goal isn't just to "win" views, likes and followers, the point is to HAVE FUN and grow your creative side. And that's exactly what families all over the world are doing together now that they are stuck inside.
If you look at the content that is popular on TikTok, family content where parents and children are participating in the videos together, is TAKING OVER! There is something wholesome, beautiful, inspiring and comforting about this type of content. Its real families doing real things together! Making videos and memories at the same time.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
Previous to Covid-19 lockdowns, parents knew their kids were on TikTok but honestly were not paying that much attention to it. Now that they are forced to spend much more time around their kids, they naturally have taken a deeper interest to understand WHY their kids on on this app and using it so much.
Through natural curiosity, parents are discovering that TikTok has a LOT more to offer than they originally thought. They are finding videos and content they enjoy and resonate with and this is giving them the incentive to CREATE their own videos with their kids.
I think there is also something to be said about how much parents LOVE to EMBARRASS their kids! There is a huge concensus that TikTok is for "young people" and because of this there is extra fun in older people creating videos because they "aren't supposed to be there". Everyone loves going against the grain once in a while.
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS
So how is this going to play out once life gets somewhat back to normal? I think families will have spent enough time creating TikTok videos that it becomes the new family traditon. Instead of GAME night, it will be TIKTOK video night.

4 年Maayan, great article! I can definitely say that I’ve enjoyed spending more time with my daughter creating Tik Toks. She’s actually not too fond of being in front of the camera, but she helps make the magic happen:) Thanks for creating, cheers!

4 年As someone whose daughter is on this app, The article resonates with me, although already pre Covid. She doesn’t let me do a video with her! ?? But I totally get it. Well written Maayan Gordon ??
