How to Thrive in a High-Failure Zone
Recently, I had dinner with an executive in the baseball industry. He described baseball as a high-failure sport. I love that phrase. Why? Because I've always used it in my speeches. Not that phrase exactly, but the idea.?
Think about it: a hitter getting three hits out of every 10 at-bats is a .300 hitter. That means they failed seven times, but they're still considered Hall of Fame material. That's why it's such a high-failure sport.
Now, that relates to all of us. We all experience slumps in sales, leadership, and life. When you're in a slump, your failure rate will increase significantly if you're not in the right mindset.?
So, how do you deal with a high failure rate??
First, you need to visualize. I'm not just talking about visualizing success when you're at bat. I'm talking about recalling a similar time in your life when you faced a similar circumstance. Think about what you were thinking, feeling, and concentrating on during that time. Then see yourself actually doing it. When your turn comes, all you have to do is replay that mental video, and your chances of success increase exponentially.?

Second, be in the moment. Ben Hogan used to say the most important golf shot is your next one. If you're in a high-failure zone because of a slump or just business challenges, forget your last at-bat if it didn't work out. If it's in your mind, it will affect your reactions, emotions, and actions. Clear that failure from your mind and concentrate on what you want to achieve.?
Finally, get feedback and make tweaks. Look, we all have blind spots and can forget simple things we used to do well. A neutral pair of eyes can identify those and help us make minor tweaks for better results.
Remember, even if you're in a high-failure rate zone because of circumstances or the nature of your business, you can still succeed, make a lot of money, and even get into the Hall of Fame.

4 个月So good. You’re best hit is your next one. Funny you had me thinking about my first career as an actor My booking rate was on average 2 out of every 10 auditions. That was pretty darn good. That meant I failed 80% of my auditions!??. Thank you for writing this great piece
