How To Be A Thought Leader - Part 1

Thought Leadership Requires Humanity

Business today is not about B2B or B2C segmentation (or any of the multitude of variations upon the theme). It’s human to human. Creating strong human connections is key to building trust in you, your business, your brand. It's foundational to thought leadership.

Creating opportunities for stakeholders to connect (both online and offline) with you as a thought leader builds credibility and trust and ultimately adds that nought to your magic number.

A CEO's reputation accounts for 10% - 50% (depending who you ask) of the valuation of a business. It’s an important differentiator. And yet, only 'big' businesses invest in building and nurturing thought leadership profiles for their executives.

What is a Thought Leader?

Thought leaders are exactly that - leaders. They are subject matter experts who are liked, trusted and supported. They have influence. The kind of influence that has impact.

A recent poll of global executives clearly shows the importance of executive thought leadership:

“The benefits of cultivating a highly regarded CEO reputation, in addition to enhancing market value, are plenty. Executives report significant benefits that accrue from positive CEO reputation including attracting investors (87%), positive media attention (83%), and crisis protection (83%). Strong CEO reputation also attracts (77%) and retains (70%) employees.”

Hand in hand with this is the finding that: “A full eight in 10 executives (81%) report that it is important for CEOs to have a visible public profile for a company to be highly regarded."

This was not always the case. Years ago, leaders and those around them confused visibility with celebrity. Today, it is about credibility.
