How To Tell If All Your Business Arrows Are Pointed In The Right Direction

How To Tell If All Your Business Arrows Are Pointed In The Right Direction

In the quest for business excellence, one of the most critical questions we must ask is: are all our "arrows"— our projects, team efforts, and strategies — aligned with our ultimate business goals? This question is not limited to Visionaries only. It's relevant to anyone, whether you're an Implementer?, an Integrator?, or climbing the corporate ladder.

?? Assessing The Flight Path Of Your Business Arrows

If you’ve found that you’re not hitting your goals, it might be because of alignment issues. When setting business goals, it’s essential that you stop and look around every once in a while. This way, you can assess your flight path before you run out of arrows altogether. You can do this by asking yourself tough questions like the ones I'll share below.

10 Questions To Help You Determine If Your Arrows Are Aligned

  1. Is This Activity Aligned With My Core Values? Every person and business has core values, even if they aren't always explicit. Take some time to reflect on your personal values, as well as your business's values. Are the tasks and projects you're involved in a true reflection of those?
  2. Does This Move The Needle Forward? Sometimes, we get caught up in tasks that are urgent but not necessarily essential. Evaluate the actual impact of what you're doing. If it's not helping move you closer to your objectives, reconsider its priority.
  3. Are My Team Members On The Same Page? Alignment isn't just about strategy; it's also about people. Is your team on the same page as you? Or could you communicate your vision more clearly with your team? Their understanding and buy-in are crucial for the correct trajectory.
  4. What's The Opportunity Cost? Every decision in business comes with a trade-off. If you invest time in one project, that takes time away from another. This is why it's essential to constantly assess if your time and resources are best spent where they currently are. Otherwise, you could be robbing yourself of other potentially lucrative opportunities.
  5. Am I Spending Time On The Tasks Worth My Wage? Ask yourself what your hourly wage would be if you were paid for your role. Then, ask yourself if you're doing any tasks that could be done by someone who's making less. For example, if you're a Visionary business owner still doing $14 per hour tasks that you could delegate to another team member or outsource, then it's time to ask yourself why you're not letting go.
  6. How Am I Measuring Success? It's not enough just to have goals; you must have metrics in place to measure progress toward those goals. After all, if you're not keeping score, how do you know you're winning?
  7. Am I Adapting To External Changes? The business landscape is perpetually evolving. Whether it's technological advances, market shifts, or global events – your strategies must be adaptable. Ask yourself if you're proactively adapting or reactively scrambling.
  8. Is There Room For Innovation? Businesses can't rest on their laurels. There must be an ongoing effort to innovate and evolve. Are your strategies and projects paving the way for future growth and change?
  9. Is Everything On Your Shoulders? One of the most potent actions leaders can undertake is effective delegation. If you're wearing all the hats, you might not have the elevation needed to see where your arrows are heading. Are you delegating and elevating, or trying to do everything alone??
  10. Are You Standing In The Flight Path??If you’re a Visionary who tends to want to control and oversee every detail, you may unintentionally be the reason arrows are veering off course. Your role is to be your company's idea generator and big-picture thinker. Being entrenched in day-to-day operations can muddy the waters of that vision. For a deeper dive into this and to determine if you’re standing in the flight path of your business goals, I invite you to read my recent article: Are All Arrows On Course To Achieve Your Business Goals?

?? Taking A Bird’s Eye View So You Can Better See Your Target

Once you've assessed your arrows, it's equally crucial to take a step back and see the bigger picture. After all, if you can't see the big picture, that means you can't see your target clearly, either. And without a clear view of your target, mapping a flight path toward it will be nearly impossible.

You'll gain the advantage by stepping back and gaining a clear bird's eye view. From this vantage point, you'll be able to observe patterns, gaps, and overlaps between you and achieving your goals. This is the best way to build a truly strategic flight plan to ensure your arrows hit their intended target every time.

?? Embracing The Feedback Loop Is Also Critical

Asking yourself challenging questions is an integral part of assessing whether your arrows are headed in the right direction toward your goals. However, seeking feedback from others is also a critical component that must be considered.

Regular feedback from your team and clients is invaluable as it acts as a real-time alignment checker. It lets you know if your actions resonate with your target or if you're missing the mark. Creating an environment where feedback is encouraged can make all the difference in achieving your goals, especially if you act upon the valuable feedback you receive.

?? Target Misses Can Be Opportunities To Help You Get Realigned

Ensuring all your business arrows are pointing in the right direction is an ongoing process. It’s a combination of reflection, adaptation, and clear communication.

As you embark on your alignment journey toward your goals, remember that occasional misses provide invaluable lessons. They serve as an opportunity to recalibrate, refine, and ultimately aim true.

??? Let's Start a Conversation

No matter our role, we've all faced challenges in ensuring our business goals align with our actions. Have you ever felt your business arrows were veering off track? How did you recalibrate??
