How Telcos and Cablecos can monetize the SmartHome

Price and simplicity to install and use is often mentioned as obstacles for IoT to take off.

New software architectures on Home Gateway devices/Internet Access Devices allow telecom and cable operators to offer community service platforms where application providers can integrate their solutions on existing hardware.

One scenario is that the Home Gateway see the same evolution as the mobile telephone did some years ago. The mobile phone very quickly evolved from being more or less a phone to become a portal to applications and services. A key enabler to make this happen was to go from proprietary operating systems to an open independant operating sytem with a clear community strategy. Important European operators are today working together to make this happen. 

In addition to develop their own IoT services, operators can provide value by exploiting their core competencies in the areas of:

  • Managing QoE/QoS in the home network (Gartner predicts hundreds of connected devices in the home)
  • Bundling IoT services with broadband and pay TV services and market that to existing customer base
  • Invoicing and first line support
