How technology is transforming the workforce - The challenges and the outcomes

Technology is driving change across businesses at a speed we have never seen before resulting in organisations rapidly needing to evolve and continually innovate. Almost every conversation we have with our customers is about their transformation agenda and technology road-map. One major inhibitor of success suggested by clients is having immediate access to the right skills, talent and technologies to assist them. Businesses are looking to invest heavily in soft skills that drive agility and collaboration and are targeting individuals that bring with them the ability to adapt, change and transform.

A recent report conducted by Deloitte[1] shows Australia is already struggling with skills in the market but the worst is yet to come as we are facing a national skills shortage that’s predicted to grow to 29 million skills in deficit by 2030.

The world of automation and AI is here and there is a growing fear in the market today that robots and machines are taking their jobs, however; this change creates great opportunities for both businesses and their people and we should embrace it. Whilst it is going to be near on impossible for organisations to save certain jobs as technology evolves, the responsibility lies within businesses to protect their people. With this comes a big focus on retraining and reinvesting in people to meet the ever-changing demands for a technology. If businesses don’t stay mindful of significant technology trends and the impacts that they can have on their organisation then they are at the risk of being left behind.

Technology has also impacted the way that we work in many ways. One prime example of this is the rise in flexible working. Ten years ago “working from home” was a rarity and often not an option for a lot of employees. Fast forward to today and it is very much a social norm with a lot of businesses encouraging this as they have the technology to support it. The ability to work remotely aids productivity for businesses. Through technology mobility, employees can seamlessly transition uninterrupted between various work locations. This flexibility is a key selling point for employees when seeking their employer of choice.

In an increasingly competitive market for talent, organisations need to create fast, efficient and flexible processes to on-board capability into their business. By creating a flexible workforce model the right platform is set to stay ahead of the competition.

In today’s era of digital transformation there seems to be a shift away from more traditional outcome based programs of work into more time based solution.
