How Technology Has Impacted the Way We Work

I still remember the days when we carried around gadgets like Batman's utility belt—our mobile phones and beepers were essential. We’d pick a cubicle in the office and log in to route our telephone extensions.

The first major shift for me was IP Telephony. Suddenly, we could take phone calls or join conference calls from anywhere with an internet connection. Having a softphone application was revolutionary.

Then came video calls, and it felt like we were living in an episode of The Jetsons.

The arrival of the first truly smart smartphones changed the game entirely. The number of tools and services available exploded.

Instant messaging applications quickly became the preferred method of communication. Initially, I was reluctant to adopt this technology. As a digital nomad, constantly driving between customers, and answering a phone call was far easier than typing out a message. Thankfully, technology has evolved, and now I can respond with voice messages.

The pandemic forced us to work from home, pushing us to adopt new tools and, more importantly, to learn new skills and develop new abilities.

Now, many large companies are trying to bring their employees back to the office. However, the benefits employees have gained in work-life balance, and the savings in travel time and transportation costs, are often overlooked.

The future of work is likely to be hybrid, embracing both flexibility and collaboration. Technology will continue to drive this change, creating new tools and fostering innovation. By embracing these advancements, we can shape a future of work that prioritizes both productivity and well-being.

How will the way we work change in the coming months, and what technology will help us be more productive?
