UKHospitality is leading the charge in addressing this critical topic, working tirelessly to convey our stance to MPs, peers, and relevant authorities.

The hospitality sector takes allergen management with utmost seriousness, striving to be transparent with customers about ingredients.

Our goal is to ensure that everyone can confidently dine in the workplace, knowing their allergies are acknowledged and accommodated.

Dialogue between staff and customers emerges as the invaluable and most effective approach to catering to individuals with allergies, according to feedback from operators of all sizes.

Through these conversations, we gain a better understanding of the nature and severity of allergies. Notably, the insights from such interactions need to be relayed to contract caterers by hospitality businesses, venues, and other outlets utilizing their services.

The tragic deaths of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse and Owen Carey, caused by severe allergic reactions, have rightfully shed light on allergen policies and legislation. UKHospitality supports the overarching goals of petitions presented to the House of Commons, as they aim to ensure customer safety.

Prior to the recent Parliamentary debate on Owen's Law, which proposes a change to allergen labelling regulations, we engaged with the MP leading the discussion.

We emphasised that flexibility is essential in enabling the best approach to customer safety. A rigid, one-size-fits-all approach might hinder our ability to achieve the goal of keeping customers safe.

Contract caterers are aware of the challenges arising from the volatility within the supply chain, where product substitutions and managing new ingredients are commonplace.

UKHospitality has recently updated and improved our Industry Guide to Good Hygiene Practice for the catering sector, placing specific emphasis on allergens and hypersensitivity. This guide exemplifies our proactive role in addressing allergen management, developed in collaboration with the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Food Standards Scotland (FSS), local authority environmental health practitioners, interest groups, and other stakeholders.

As the only industry food hygiene guide officially recognized by the FSA and FSS, this comprehensive document outlines compliance standards and best practices required for all catering businesses.

It serves as a go-to resource for food enforcement officers during inspections, ensuring customer safety remains paramount.

Looking ahead, having a "single source of truth" that provides comprehensive information on calories, fats, sugars, and allergens throughout the entire food supply chain would be a valuable tool. This resource would empower frontline businesses to provide accurate and up-to-date information to consumers.

Naturally, the scale and complexity of such a project are immense, requiring the involvement of the entire UK food supply chain to be effective. It's an area we are eager to explore with stakeholders.
