How is technology being incorporated into higher education?

Technology is being increasingly incorporated into higher education in a variety of ways. From online learning platforms and virtual classrooms to augmented reality simulations and AI-powered tutoring systems, the integration of educational technology (EdTech) has become a key focus for many universities and colleges. Recent research has highlighted several key considerations for effectively integrating these technologies into the higher education landscape.:

Careful selection of technologies based on their strengths and limitations, as well as the intended learning outcomes, is crucial. Instructors should incentivize students to use technology, such as by assigning grades or offering extra credit. ?Clear communication of guidelines for technology use, including navigational features and expectations for professional use, can also improve student engagement (Schindler et al., 2017).

Additionally, using technology to provide authentic and integrated learning experiences, rather than just supplementary activities, can enhance student engagement. For example, incorporating social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook throughout a marketing program may be more appropriate than in an engineering or accounting program (Schindler et al., 2017).

A recent review of the literature also identified five key dimensions that should guide EdTech implementation decisions in higher education: the technology itself, stakeholder perceptions, academic discipline, success metrics, and relevant theoretical frameworks (Chugh et al., 2023). ?Considering these factors can help universities develop effective strategies for integrating educational technologies.
