How Technology (and AI) can reduce poverty

How Technology (and AI) can reduce poverty

When I have been first talking with Trevor Smith about Kanndoo , and how he wants to eradicate poverty through tecnology (including AI), I was extremely sceptic. To cut the story short, it turns out he was right.

In this post, I want to give an overview how Kanndoo technology can truly benefit our society and how actually technology (and AI) can untap an entire economy that, without it, it would be completely unviable.

I truly believe Trevor and Kanndoo deserves any support they can. And, for me, it is an honour to write about it.

As poverty is a fact, it is also a fact that donors (any kind) are potentially everywhere.

Let's make (silly) examples.

Imagine a family they may have 3 extra packages of pasta and 1 jumper to donate (or throw away). Well, they have to drive to a charity center (gas costs) then a charity worker collects and distributes (other cost) to the person in need. Not to mention the time the family member has to spend to reach the collection point.

Also imagine an elderly woman, the light bulb is broken in the kitchen. She may actually willing to pay someone to take a new bulb and change it... if she knew who to ask for. Well, she may call an electrician but the job is too small to actually make it viable.

Again, I may be a teacher and I can dedicate 1h a month to teach math: so I have to find the right charity for that, then schedule the time , agree with the people involved and then I can 'donate' my 1h a month. Essentially, to donate 1h a month, a person also needs to donate 3h to arrange the actually 1h teaching donation.

You may already get that there are many, many examples like that.

What is truly missing here, is a cost effective matching system between demand (poverty) and supply (donors) so that donors can actually donate with no 'extra cost' (alternatively called 'overhead cost').

The idea behind Kanndoo and its apps ecosystem is exactly that: it allows to cut the 'extra cost' of donation and matching directly demand with supply.

The match making technology behind Kanndoo is actually ready and, as usual, adoption will be key.

Of course, from here there further 'overhead costs' can be cut to match people in need with donors. For example, an automatic personal assessment in the app (yes, in this case using some AI solutions) may detect the person's need. For example the need for treatment or psicological support because (more often than not) people do not even realize they are in need (or they are in self denial).

As I always say to clients, infrastructure is always the first step to implement AI solution and Kanndoo has done it. It is already a great jump forwards.

Now it is time for adoption and with time we will enrich the platform with AI based features ( we are already discussing it with Trevor ).

In behalf of AI Technologies, I wish Kandoo and Trevor a brilliant future and I will personally support them as I can.

Merry Christmas to all.

There are hundreds more ways that AI could be useful to reduce poverty but real issue is that we're not making investments into the things that we should be if we really want to combat poverty Andrea Isoni
