How tech-minimalism changed my life
Does anyone know that you can now work on your smartphone as if you were on a laptop? Am I the only one seeing all the benefits of being mobile-only for the environment ? In this article I will share my daily work setup and my thoughts on how we can change the future by switching to mobile-only instead of "device-many".
I have switched entirely on my smartphone as primary computing device in 2022. You cannot imagine the freedom that you gain by having your computer, your data, you software environment always with you in your pocket, it is like having a credit card, you live in a world with less limitations and less boundaries. I remember in April 2023, being at the café in Bordeaux and feeling pleased of using the full power of my phone.
My daily smartphone is a Samsung Fold Z3 and I use a MiraBook lapdock to convert my smartphone into a laptop when I feel the need. The MiraBook is always in my bag, ready to follow me everywhere like the best companion to travel. At the office I have a tiny but robust MiraDock connected to a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard. Now let me tell you a typical day.
I wake up between 8h30 and 9h30 and immediatly start working in my bed with my Samsung Fold smartphone. The great thing is that it can be a telephone but also a tablet, so I use the tablet mode to better read and write my emails and whatsapp text with a bigger screen. I then prepare and go to the office and dock my smartphone on the MiraDock. It then launches Samsung DeX, the Android PC mode made by Samsung. This is the perfect environment to work with your mobile. What if I need to go to the meeting room? Well, there are free-floating MiraBook waiting for me there and the only device I need to carry is my phone. What if I need to go elsewhere for an external meeting? In that case, I just take my bag with my personal MiraBook in it and I am good to go.
Having my phone as my pocket computer is creating me so much comfort and fluidity in my work days that I would never go back to owning a laptop and a smartphone and a tablet. Aside from the effectiveness and productivity booster, I feel like I am doing a positive move for the environment and that my computing hardware is aligned with my ecologic values. In fact, the MiraBook has 40% less components and generates 56% less carbon footprint.
Let me know if you have any questions and if I can be of any help. I'll be sharing other contents about how to become tech-minimalists and share with you my experience.

1 年Well, or you do it the other way around, buy high end components and extendable hardware, take good care for the hardware and you can enjoy those tools for ages! I still have 14 year old laptops ruining, some for productive code projects, because the where overpower at there time. Same for Smartphones buy one pro version every 6-8 years is much better use use of resources as the requirement to buy custom ware every 2 years just to properly boot the OS. At the end it mostly depends on your needs, if you need to sustain local computing power or live a easy live by just maintaining Server Client Applications and work online.
