How teach students Power Skills? A proof of concept ...

What has been started in late 2021 by two engaged professors Prof. Dr. Kirsten Nazarkiewicz , Prof. Dr. Iken Adelheid , with

- the development & publication of an e Learning Program for Design Thinking??

- its collaborative application ?between these two universities – UAS Fulda & HAW Hamburg – with 3 cohorts of students in 2022 and 2023

… now has become almost a routine with the collaboration of UAS Fulda and UAS Furtwangen, as Adelheid Iken (HAW Hamburg) has retired:

?It’s the fourth cohort of students that we - Prof. Dr. Kirsten Nazarkiewicz , Prof. Dr. Julika Baumann Montecinos , and I – guide through a virtual self-learning experience with an intentionally minimum support from us. All each student gets from us is ...

  • a couple of co-students with which they form a virtual team for the duration of the DT-project. Intentionally we combine 2 students from UAS Fulda with 2 students from UAS Furtwangen; all students share a diverse background with respect to their national origination and the special fields of their studies.
  • a selection of How-Might-We-challenges – each team deals with one of the HMM-challenge :

How might we design an inclusive on-boarding process at universities?

How might we contribute on an everyday basis to reduce the climate crisis?

How might we increase the usage of the Edu Boxes (= E-learning courses e.g. on Intercultural Communication)?

How might we deal with the challenges of AI (e.g. Chat GPT) in our university system?

How might we strengthen identification with being European beyond national identity?

How might we introduce intercultural competence as a school subject?

How might we design an inclusive on-boarding process in companies?

How might we increase student engagement at the faculties?

How might we connect SMEs on the latest sustainability reporting regulations?

How might we increase the voter turnout in the European elections?

How might we optimize the combination of presence and online teaching?

How might we help international graduates enter the German job market?

  • a time boxing by when everything should be completed (= the Pitch Event at the end of the semester)
  • e learning-material for self-studies: i.e. Edu Boxes dealing with Design Thinking, Intercultural Communication, Virtual Intercultural Teams
  • a minimum of fixed, mandatory calendar appointments for all teams together including one common kick-off session, a QA session and?the pitch-events
  • support on demand by the two professors and me as the Design Thinking expert in case unexpected issues occur …

This week we ran the QA session. It served to provide further methodological explanations following the kick-off call and their own starts in their teams. Each team had to participate at least with one representative and we are happy to observe how well the students manage challenges like forming their teams, starting their collaboration, understanding their challenges, dealing with the e learning material, supporting each other, etc.

It ′s really a highlight for me to see that this program addresses the top power skills which the PMI ?(Pulse of the Profession)? and the WEF ( Future of Jobs-Report ) predict as key to manage future professional challenges: communication, collaboration, problem solving, creative & analytical thinking. The participating students will clearly have an advantage when entering the job markets.?
