Key Takeaways with Tim Storey
Scott:?Tim, I think a lot of times when we listen to podcasts; people speak in generalities… so I’m going to ask you a lot of specific questions. I’m going to look at this interview as my own personal coaching session. I have the opportunity to talk to you so I’m going try to take advantage of it if that’s OK.
Tim:?OK, of course.
Scott:?You’ve said that you can’t have a rainbow without a storm… and big success typically comes after you hit a low. I love this because it reinforces what Napoleon Hill suggested in Think and Grow Rich – “Turning points in the lives of those who succeed are introduced through crisis and they are introduced to their other selves.”
Tim:?You can you have a lot of success without adversity. It can be a hybred because I see a lot of people that came up in a very plush atmosphere and environment and it lasted a very long time. I work with a lot of celebrities, whose families just continued successfully and then others over their mid 30s or 40s began to crash. You can have adversity with a divorce or something else. I think you can ride high and keep it going higher. The other side is that sometimes people learn the greatest lessons through pain… through their adversity.
I do believe through pain, adversity and/or a setback in life… LESSONS GO DEEPER.
Scott:?Where did you come up with the philosophy of a miracle mentality?
Tim:?The idea of the Miracle Mentality is birthed out of Psalm 78 in the Bible. It explains to tell the next generation about the miracles of God... and they in turn would tell their children… and then their children would tell their children.
So, I thought that’s interesting that biblical blessings are supposed to go down three generations deep. So, I started thinking, to properly explain something, it’s better if you have a REVELATION of that something. That allows you to tell the next generations about what you have SEEN and what you’ve HEARD, which is so powerful. What you’ve seen and heard, that’s miraculous. That’s where I got my idea for the Miracle Menality.
We can get this mentality and it can become our reality.
Scott:?You talk a lot about the different states that most people live in – the MUNDANE, the MESSY, MADNESS and the MAGICAL. What do you mean by those states? How would you explain these?
Tim:?I just did a seminar for 140,000 people this morning… at one time.
Scott:?Wow!
Tim:?140,000… me and John Maxwell and a few other people. This is what I taught them.
The MUNDANE is the uneventful, the routine, and the ordinary. So, what happens in our lives is that we all must do mundane things like take out the trash. I take out my own trash… that’s mundane. We do laundry… sometimes I do my laundry. Sometimes we must clean out the refrigerator… that’s mundane. Going to the DMV, that’s super mundane. So, the mundane is where I believe, a lot of people are stuck. They live in what I call the land of okay.
Second, is the MESSY, which means to be disheveled, disorderly or confused. There’s a lot of people that their life was not as messy until COVID-19 got into all of our lives.
The third stage is what I call the MAD where things are just out of control. Mad is the out of control and overly confused.
Then there’s the fourth stage MAGICAL… which is extraordinary, unbelievable, amazing… astonishing. It’s hard to get to the magical if you’re in the middle of the mess and the madness.
Scott:?I was going to get to the magical because that’s where we all want to live our life. So, I want you to talk about the magical and specifically what’s that mean? Describe that a little bit and then I want dive into the mundane, the messy and the madness. More importantly, let’s talk about… How do we get to the MAGICAL? First, define magical.
Tim:?Walt Disney walks into an music park in the 1930s. Remember, Disneyland does not manifest until the late 1950s. So, the mid 1930s he goes in with a friend and he says, “I want to build my own amusement park someday.” This may not be the exact words… but he says, “Mine is going be different, better and more magical!”
I find that people that I coach, which are predominantly celebrities for the last 30 years... That when they were young, they knew they were supposed to do something different, better, and more magical.
That’s not just Brad Pitt, Robert Downey and Kanye West… it’s not just them. Everybody knows that supposed to do something different, better and more magical. So, I think this idea of magical as I breakdown the word, it means extraordinary, amazing, and astonishing. EXTRA, to me magic in life is extra. Extra in the way you think. Extra in the way you do. Extra in your compassion. Extra in your giving. That’s magical.
Scott:?So, what is the first step in finding magic in your life for the people who are living in madness?
Tim:?The magic number one is in you. Either somebody talked you out and as you know there’s two big things: the growth mindset right and the fixed mindset. There are a lot of people who were raised by parents have a fixed mindset. So, when you when your young and coming up with creative and clever ideas that we’re supposed to change the world… your parents… not on purpose… would try to bring you into their fixed mindset.
Fixed mindset parents say things like - “People like us don’t do that.” and “People like us don’t become this.”
Scott:?Things like, “That’s too expensive!” or “That can’t be done!” or “No one’s ever done that before!”
Tim:?Yes, one hundred percent! I was listening to Arsenio Hall being interviewed by Howard Stern the other day. Arsenio was saying that his dad, who is a minister, was trying to talk him out of coming to LA to become a comedian.??He was saying basically that’s like Sodom and Gomorrah. You’re going to die there. It’s going to be terrible. He says in all due respect to my father, he was wrong. So, I think that the magical is innate.
So, all I do in my book, The Miracle Mentality, is...
wire you back to who you really are and that is somebody who has a miracle mentality.
Scott:?Let’s get back to the madness really quick. How would you specifically describe the madness?
Tim:?As out-of-control and the confusion. But, in all fairness to people, if your daughter is having trouble or your daughter ran away… anyone can go into the state of madness. Your wife could leave you for another man. I life coach people and that happens or vice versa. Anybody can go into the state of madness. If you’re battling depression and it won’t lift off of you… anybody can go into madness.
So, when you’re in a place of madness, you’re not yourself. So, this is very important, I’ll give you three steps to get out of the madness: Number one… become awake, number two… take inventory, and number three… you must partner with the right people.?
Scott:?One thing I do personally is I don’t crowd my brain with negativity. I don’t watch the news. I stopped not because I can’t deal with it… I don’t want to deal with it. When I used to watch the news, I consciously becoming aware of my mental state. I concluded that while I want to know what’s going… everything the news talks about or at least the way it is positioned to me… does not serve me in a good way.
In my opinion, your brain only has so much capacity. You can choose to fill it with the right stuff, or you can fill it with crap. The more crap you put in, the less room there is for the good.
So, I thought it was interesting in your book when you talked about some of the specific activities that someone could do to help them out of their madness and mess as well as some of the draining activities people should eliminate.
Can you go into more detail?
Tim:?We tend to get into ruts. Maybe we’re going through life, and your life is mundane but you’re OK with being mundane. So, then all these terrible things happen like with Covid. You get challenged, and you go from mundane to messy, to the mad or the madness. So, now you’re in that state.
We’ve got to go back and wake up, take inventory, and partner with the right people.?
When partnering with the right people, the power of the people that you partner with should try to take you out of the state of madness that you’re in. Part of that, is to do things a different way.
A lot of times when I am coaching somebody I’ll say, “Okay, let me help you get out of this. You said you used to play tennis… when was last time you played tennis?” They want me to talk to them about something deep and philosophical and I’m talking about tennis. Why am I talking about tennis? Why am I trying to get them back into tennis when they haven’t played in 11 years?
Because they may have described to me in an earlier conversation how tennis made them feel great… they had great tennis friends… they liked how they felt playing tennis, etc.
So, now I want to get them back into tennis. I want to get them back into Pilates, yoga, painting, taking French or taking a cooking class. I call that shifting your satellite dish. Wherever your satellite dish is focused on, that’s what you pick up. If you’re just shifting in your satellite dish to your own pain, that’s what you’re picking up.
Shifting your focus is a great technique and it’s worked on the best.
Scott:?I love that. A large part of the move crush count audience are business leaders, executives, and owners. I’m a good example of some of the characters you bring up in your book. I think one of the reasons your book motivated me so much was when you talk about the mundane state.
I am a very happy person. I love what I’ve accomplished with my family, relationships and in business. However, what used to excite me, no longer does. I probably knew this or felt it on some level before I read your book.??Then I read your book and I thought… man, I feel like a prisoner to some of the things that I feel like I’ve got a hold on to or still control or do. To me these things were no longer exciting because I was like… I’ve been doing this for 30 years. That’s what I took when reading about the mundane.
I realized as good as everything might seem… am I really living in this magical state right now? On paper, yeah… but not inside. So, when you talk about doing things in a different way and returning to the activities that put you in the state you want to live in… I took that to heart.
One of the activities I started doing more even though it takes a lot of my time is golf. I truly enjoy it because I like the competitiveness, comradery, conversations, and the peace it brings. Suddenly, I’m not feeling this routine crap that goes on every day.
Tim:?I like that, and I think that a lot of times people feel like they’re being selfish. Especially if you have children, to go golf for 4 1/2 hours but most times you’re not. I feel that by being more vibrant and be more animated… Let me tell you about an interesting word. The word animation means lively.
I have a friend who works at a high executive level at Disney, and he is very animated. He happens to work in animation, and I like talking to him because he’s animated. Notice how little kids love animated people. When somebody has a very boring personality, the kid just stares at him and goes. When somebody has an animated face, voice, energy, and movements… the kid is a transfixed person. Interesting right?
Yes, because we love animation. We love life. So, one thing Scott, when you go from the mundane which is not animated… you’ve got to get back into the things that animated you again. With me, one thing that triggers me back into animation is music. I listen to Motown music or music of that nature EVERY SINGLE MORNING. Every morning, I’m listening to Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson. Earth, Wind and Fire were not with Motown but they’re my friends so every single morning I listen because it takes me back to the inner cities of LA where I was raised in. It kicks me into my culture and I’m ready to go!
Scott:?You’ve talked about taking inventory. What is that? How does someone do that effectively?
Tim:?Okay, so I used to work at a place called Miller’s Outpost which isn’t around anymore. If you’ve been in a Levi store, Miller‘s Outpost was in a similar genre. I was in high school, and I remember my manager Laura would say Timmy (I was Timmy until I was 18) because you’re so organized… I only need four of you… we’re going to take inventory of the whole store. So, it’s going to be three managers and four employees… seven of us will knock this out. I said, “Of course.” Then she says you’re going to get a bonus for it.
So, we’re going in on a Saturday before the store opens and we take inventory. I start going through the jeans by size. So, you’re going through the inventory, you see what’s there and writing it down.
We must take inventory of our lives. You have different areas of your life. Your spiritual…How are you spiritually???Take inventory. How are you physically? You must take inventory. How about the clarity of mind and your social life? Your family… how is your family doing? How is your career doing? How are you financially? That’s taking inventory.
Scott:?I’m someone that’s got certain levels of success like a lot of people in our audience… some higher than others… and they’re stuck in some areas in their life. Let’s say I’m sitting here and I’m unsure of where I need to go. So, we talk about living a magical life and I want to bring in more positive energy… I want to strengthen the relationships I have in my circle of influence (I believe relationships are a key to success) … I want to strengthen all these areas. How do I discover where my magic is? How do I discover what really motivates me? Maybe I’m saying to myself… I’ve been doing this… but man this is really what I’m meant to do. You discovered it very early on.
Tim:??It’s a great question. What happens in life is some things you decide and other things you discover. Most people had other people decide what they should be doing.
So, their dad said, “What? You’re not going to be with Owen & Sons?”… “You’re not going to be a doctor like I was a doctor?” …??“You’re not going to work in the oil fields like I worked in the oil fields?”?
A lot of my friends have gone through that kind of pressure with very strong parents. Or, you could have a spouse who wants to put as John Maxwell says, “The law of the lid” on you and “mini me” you by accident. This is very good stuff we’re talking about here Scott.

People begin to become a discount version of themselves. When you become a discount version of yourself, you know you’ve been put on sale. You wake up and you say, “Crap! I feel like I’m on the sale rack or on sale!” Does this make sense to you?
Scott:?Perfect sense.
Tim:?So, these people ask, “What do I do now?” Ask yourself, what have you been designing? Who is helping you make these decisions? Are you open to discovery?
Most people, the greatest things they step into, is not in the decision… it’s in the discovery. They see something, which is observation, and they go… that’s me!
It’s like if somebody watches Gary V and they say, “Gary’s got swag. I got swag!” He’s doing these kinds of businesses… I can do that too. I’m the only one that has spoken four out of five times for Grant Cardone’s 10x conference… the only one. So, if someone watches Grant and they see what he does in real estate, they may say, “I can do that too.”
Steve Harvey is a great friend of mine and has like seven shows. Even though I’ve got a lot on my plate, I think to myself, if Steve Harvey can have seven shows at that magnitude… hey, that stirs me up too. That’s discovery. So, some things you decide and some things you discover.
Start observing more and pay attention to your observations.
Scott:?So, Grant is a good friend of mine as well and that’s where we initially met in one of his Clubhouse rooms. I see you in Clubhouse frequently.
Tim:?I’m on it only occasionally. I’m about humanitarian work with prison reform, I’m working with the elderly and work with the homeless. So, that’s me. I’m not really in Clubhouse that much. I’m usually on twice a week max but I feel like the app and itself has connected a lot of really good people. For me, it’s been great, and I’ve met a lot of quality people like yourself.
Scott:?I want to go back to what you were just talking about. I think we all have this vision of what our perfect life or what success looks like. So, I’ve got two questions for you: One, what does success look like for you? The real question I want to know is… how often does your idea of success match up with the reality of it?
Tim:?I’m going to give a different answer than most people because to me, success is really about completing a project, or an assignment and then you feel successful. Success to me is very different than most people. Success to me is doing the will of God for my life.
So, when I was fourteen and I was vacuuming the church for free… I was a success. I was making tapes in a tape ministry at fourteen… I was a success.
When I started getting 2,000 invitations a year to speak around the world… I GUESS I was still a success. Then I’m on Oprah’s talk show, Oprah’s books, Oprah’s documentaries, her magazine and traveling with Oprah… I GUESS I’m a success.
Helping the homeless… I’m a success. Success for me is doing the WILL OF GOD. That makes it easy for me so I’m not tripping whether or not I’m a success or not. I just want to do my assignment then I’m successful.
Scott:?When you say success for you is doing the WILL of GOD. I have to say... that really levels the playing field for every single person on the planet. It doesn't matter if someone earns 9 figures a year or they're on the streets begging for 9 cents. In the end, the only appraisal of success that God measures is what we did for Him with our life and if we sought His will or not.
That's why in the Bible, Jesus says in Heaven the first will be last and the last will be first. because Heaven's priorities are not the priorities we are taught on Earth.
Tim… let me ask you on a not so serious question… Does the fact that you appeared on Oprah‘s show first, mean it was easier to get on that show compared to getting on move crush count? Or, stated in another way, did you feel like you really had to work hard to get on this show compared to hers????
Tim:?I think getting on your show was like a step up???! I was like, how do I get on that doggone show?
I’m in ninety airports around the world right now. When you travel next, look and you’ll you see me on all the big screens. I write for United Airlines and American Airlines magazine every month. I’m in over 1 million hotel rooms around the world every day motivating people and that all started with VACUUMING THE CHURCH. That’s a success.
This is a success, being with you is a success.
Scott:?Thank you. You’re quoted as saying...
“If you want uncommon results that you have to start a start living an uncommon life.”
I love that quote. You talk about setting the conditions for yourself to make a magic life happen. In order to achieve an uncommon life, what does someone have to do to set the right conditions? What does that mean? How does that happen?
Tim:?I tell you, so much is in a mindset. As a man or woman think it… so is he or she.
It’s in the mindset because if your mindset is… I have to accomplish all this then I’m a success… you’re going to suck for a long time. The fact that I said I was a success at fourteen because of vacuuming the church… do you know how much pressure that takes off me?
People approach me EVERY DAY of my life… not every other day… not once a week but every day and say… “I got something great for you. I got a plan. I got these people who want to meet you from Dubai. They’re fans of yours. They could change your life.” I’m not in the mood.
Or I get… “Tim, some big celebrity wants to meet you but you’re going to have to go here and turn left, turn right, etc.” I say, “I’m good. I’m staying home. I’m not in the mood.” This really happens all day long. I don’t chase anything because again, I just want to do my assignment. When you get when you get that kind of mindset Scott, man! There’s an old song by En Vogue… Free Your Mind and the Rest Will Follow.
Scott:?You talk a lot about educating yourself, having conversations… observing things…
Tim:?Good! You did your homework.
Scott:?I’ve read the book! Let’s talk a little bit about what that means.
Tim:?You did your homework! I’m showing off because people don’t know… they think I’m just chatting about stuff. But I have researchers. Look at all this research (As Tim displays a huge binder of insights). I have over 3,000 pages of research. It cost me no less than $70,000. I have researchers because whatever the subject is, I have researchers come at me with materials and insights. I’m not just going blah, blah, blah like some of these silly people online. I wish it was like the Gong Show where we could gong some of these people telling silly crap on social media. That’s funny stuff.
Observation means watching, monitoring, examining, and surveying. Kids are observing us as adults every day. They’re watching, monitoring, examining, and surveying us. Dad, you look sleepy. Mom, you look irritated at Dad (laughs).
Scott:?You know what… that starts at a lot younger age than people think. I can remember when my youngest daughter was sitting in her little Bumbo… you know the little seats that allow infants to sit upright before their time. I would remember watching her eyes and just focusing on every little thing. You could see the learning. You could just see it in her eyes how much she was paying attention to… whether it was to me or my wife. I’ve got three children and it was the first one where I actually paid attention to that and recognized that the learning is just constant, and it started so young.
Tim:?We’re not observing like we should, and I love that story about your kids. We’re not observing like we should because we’re tripping on stuff. I watch these young guys on social media… like dude I’m on my GRIND… I’m on my grind. I’m like dude you damn sleepy you should take a nap. Or they say, “I beat the sun up!” Go back to bed (laughs).
I was in Dana Point spending a few days there working on a project which is right next to Laguna Beach. I saw these three kids on bikes with surfboards connected to their bicycles and they must have been eleven or twelve years old. They were rolling along and they’re laughing. I was walking across the street, and I was in a more serious tone in my mood because I’m helping a few friends that are going through dire straits… big time problems. So, I’m thinking about what we can do to try to get them through it.
So, I’m crossing the street and I see these three kids… hair flying and their laughing… and I looked up to observe them right. They were living life. They’ve got their bikes… surf boards somehow attached… and I’m like okay… quit thinking about your friend for a minute and look at these kids super animated. Observe the animation in the midst of a pandemic, and the masks, and the 6 feet social distancing signs. Observe! There’s animation all around us still.
Scott:?What would life be like if we approached our daily “To Do’s” and “Tasks” with the same level of enthusiasm as we did when we were kids?
Tim:?You’d see what you’ve got here (laughs and points at himself). I haven’t shaved yet. I’m still feeling good… I’ve got problems in my life. Anytime you do anything BIG, big things will come at you negatively as well. I’ve got huge successes in my life but also got dilemmas that I’ve got to deal with like anybody else. But I choose to have a miracle mentality that has become my reality.
This isn’t a joke to me. I was teaching this in Spain and during the Q&A answers a lady ask me a question. First, she came at me with a statement because she was upset with me. She said, “I don’t like this American philosophy that we could have this magic life. Do you understand how much and so many of us have been through?”
I said, “I think you missed like the seminar, did you just come in? You didn’t hear me say my dad died when I was ten. My sister died when I was twelve. My brother died of addiction from alcohol. Did you miss all that? Then she got sad. She just listened and then she apologized later. This is not what I was trying to accomplish but you see I choose not to sit in my setback of all that stuff that’s happened. Very powerful stuff.
That’s why my book is not just a book… it’s a movement. This book is a movement. On the night you were on Clubhouse, we sold around 21,000 books. You bought about 100 so you give out to people that are hurting… it’s a movement. This is a movement to me. This is not just to write a book. It’s movement to shake the heck out of ourselves so we can start living our life and not just go through life.
Scott:?We were talking once on Clubhouse about belief systems. What I like about belief systems is they can help you spiral up just as easily as they can help you spiral down. A lot of what you talk about is an empowering belief system. Most people allow their beliefs to be shaped by the results they get. They start with the result instead of an empowering belief.
When we allow our beliefs to be shaped by results first, it can create a limiting belief system. Let’s face it… many times when we try things (especially new things)… the results aren’t always good.
If we have poor results, we start to believe we don’t have what it takes, I’m too young, I’m not educated enough, etc. These are limiting beliefs.
When we have limiting beliefs… we limit our potential. When we limit our potential, we take less action. When we take less action, we get even worse results. The poor results reinforce our limiting belief system and people spiral down.
You can’t start with results.
You must start with an empowering belief system.
When we start with an empowering belief system, we tap into more potential. When we believe we have more potential, we take more action, which leads to better results. Better results, reinforce your empowering belief system and people spiral up.
You must start with an empowering belief system. This is one of the reasons I love your book so much.
Tim:?Yes! If you want to expand and grow, which you all do which is why you’re tuning into move crush count… change your mentality! Not to almost thinking, or most thinking but utmost thinking. And don’t act like you’ve got it all figured out because you don’t.
Scott:?What is the most common thing people are not doing, that you would advise them to start doing right away?
Tim:?I’m going to take a deep breath because this is a big question. Number one… don’t put yourself down for what you haven’t done. Today is a new day. Don’t be like, Oh crap… I listened to Tim and Scott… I suck… I should have done this a long time ago. Today’s decisions are tomorrow’s realities. So today, make the decision to change your mentality into a miracle mentality. It will change your life.
Scott:?Tim Storey, I want to thank you for graciously sharing your experience, knowledge, and expertise with the move crush count audience.?
