How to Tame a Troublesome Employee: A Guide for Employers

As an employer, dealing with a difficult employee can be about as much fun as a root canal. But fear not, there are ways to handle even the most challenging of team members! Here are some tips:

Document everything:

Before you start planning their demise, make sure to document the employee's behavior. This will be helpful later if you need to have a chat with HR or even take legal action (hopefully not).

Address the issue early on:

Don't wait until the whole team is doing a "difficult employee" drinking game??. Schedule a private meeting with the employee to discuss the issue and explain how their behavior is impacting the workplace. Don't be afraid to use your best corny jokes to lighten the mood!

Set clear expectations:

During your meeting, set clear expectations for the employee going forward. Explain what you need from them in terms of behavior, performance, and outcomes, and how their actions impact the team and the company. (Use a more serious but empathetic tone).

Provide feedback and support:

Once you've set expectations, provide regular feedback and support to the employee. Let them know how they're doing, recognize their successes, and provide guidance on how to improve their performance. You could even keep things fun and bake them a cake (just don't put laxatives in it.?Even in the name of fun).

Follow up and take action:

If the employee's behavior doesn't improve, follow up with them and take appropriate action. This could involve additional training, coaching, or disciplinary action, depending on the severity of the issue. And if all else fails, you could always bring them in a cake and put laxatives in it.

Handling a difficult employee can be a tricky situation, but with clear communication, documentation, and a good sense of humor, you can help turn the situation around. Don't hesitate to seek help from your local friendly neighborhood Staff Leasing HR Manager ?? if needed and remember to prioritize the well-being of the entire team and company (and maybe bring in some donuts too).
