How to Take Small Bites of Exercise for Big Benefit
FASTer Way to Fat Loss
Equipping and empowering women and men to get well, prevent disease and fulfill their potential with energy.
As fitness professionals, we're constantly exploring new approaches to help our clients achieve sustainable results. In our latest podcast interview, we spoke with Joey Thurman, author of "The Minimum Method" - a book anchored in the concept of the "minimum effective dose" for exercise and nutrition.
"Too often, people think they need to spend hours grinding away in the gym and starving themselves to get in shape," Thurman explained. "But the research shows that's not an effective or sustainable approach. It's about finding that minimum dose that provides results without extreme deprivation."
For exercise, Thurman advocates "exercise snacking" - breaking up movement into shorter, frequent bouts throughout the day. "Can you do five sets of arms in 10 minutes? Or take three 10-minute walks per day? Those snacks add up to provide a solid dose of activity." Simple but powerful advice for our time-crunched society.
On the nutrition front, Thurman summed it up eloquently: "Calories determine your weight, macros determine how you look, and micros determine how you feel."
Rather than severely slashing calories, the focus should be:
1) Achieving a moderate calorie deficit for fat loss
2) Optimizing protein, healthy fats, and nutrient-dense carb sources to look and feel your best

3) Prioritizing micronutrients from whole foods for overall vitality
As Thurman noted, "Drastic cuts and excessive exercise may produce short-term results, but often lead to metabolic adaptation and rebound weight gain. It's about finding your minimum effective dose for sustainability."
At FASTer Way, we build this philosophy into every aspect of our program. Our workouts emphasize high-intensity circuits that yield maximum results in minimum time, and only two days a week. Strength training rounds out the remaining exercise routines. Our nutrition plans maintain a sensible calorie deficit while ensuring adequate protein, fiber, healthy fats, and micronutrient density and are easily adjusted so each client gets the macronutrient needs to meet their individual fitness goals.
The result? Clients achieve their goals through balanced habits they can seamlessly integrate into their lifestyles for the long haul. No more all-or-nothing, no more weight cycling, no more burnout.
True health and fitness isn't about deprivation or killing yourself in the gym daily. It's about practicing sustainable habits, unique to your lifestyle, that provide the minimum effective dose for incredible results.
