How to Take Off the Mask

In an earlier post, I talked about masks – how most of us, including me, have been guilty of wearing them at some point in our lives – at the office, at home, with our neighbors. At first, taking off that mask may sound simple. After all, how hard can it be to just... be? The answer? Really, really hard.
There is a lot of psychology, social conditioning, and societal pressure behind the urge to put on a mask. The truth is, we all have baggage that makes us less than comfortable in our own skin! But I’m not a therapist, and you’re not on my couch. What I do want to talk about is the present. What action can you take today (and every day) to bid farewell to masks?
Steps to Express Your True Self
- Get to know yourself! This whole entire thing – authenticity and expression – begins with an awareness of self. Dedicate regular time to think about and assess your values, skills, weaknesses, goals, and the people or events that shaped you. What is your story? Consider the way you are perceived by others, too. Does this match up with what you know of yourself?
- Actively engage with the people around you. Be present. Be vulnerable. We all have something in common, so in addition to getting to know yourself, you should strive to get to know the people around you. Ask questions! Listen closely! In the process of engaging, it’s almost impossible not to connect and reveal some facet of our true selves.
- Keep your behavior at work aligned with your intentions. Ask yourself, “What are my goals?” Discovering and staying true to yourself is one of life’s most important challenges, but be careful you don’t fall into the trap of bringing negative or unaligned traits to the table for the sake of authenticity.
- When you slip up and fall back into old habits of hiding, don’t punish yourself. For many of us, taking off the mask will be a lifelong journey. Just remember, it’s worth it. I promise!
