How To Take A Break When You’re Too Busy

How To Take A Break When You’re Too Busy

Being someone who’s so great at being overworked, here’s what I’ve got to tell you –

A little break every now and then helps save time.

So, for me, this disease of “feeling good after a busy day” dates back to the times when I was in tenth grade. Since then, that feeling of unfulfillment remained on the not-so-busy days.

My friend and Co-founder,?Ashraf Kamal , talks about it like this –

“Are you busy, or busy for nothing?”

Well, most of us are busy for nothing.

Sure, in our minds, thoughts keep crowding and we?feel?busy. However, worrying about your task at hand will not get it done. So, it won’t even count as you being busy when you’re only worrying about it.

Now, that doesn’t mean that when you’re planning, strategizing, and brainstorming ideas sitting alone or in a group will not count as working towards getting something done.

Sometimes, I feel unsettled until I’ve not put things to paper.

In that context, Ashraf repeats this over my head often –

“Thinking is also working.”

So, in a nutshell, to be able to work better, be productive, and escape the busyness syndrome, we need to ACCEPT a few things –

  • Slowing down or taking a break during work hours is okay, no guilt.
  • We don’t have to prove ourselves to be a superstar all the time to others around us.
  • Taking help makes us more human.

Now, once we accept these, let me share what I’ve learned from being a recovering busyness syndrome patient my whole life.

  1. Give yourself long-term broad goals – like what do you want to achieve or get done in the coming month? Break it down into what is required from you or your team to make it happen. Then make a list of weekly activities accordingly. Give yourself the flexibility of moving your tasks around to different days, making sure that nothing must go beyond that week.
  2. Have the exact to-do list for yourself at the end of every work day for the next day.
  3. Delegate your work smartly, and be an awesome manager that way. As a leader, this is the most important skill you need to cultivate. When you assign some work to others, make sure –

  • They have everything they need before getting started
  • You’re accessible to them easily throughout the day
  • You trust them with their judgment and skills
  • You do not micromanage them, but ask them to report to you every day or alternate days about the progress, whatever suits

4. Pause and ask yourself, “Why am I so busy?” The answer might surprise you, and you might relearn something that you could correct soon.

  1. Have a chat with a non-work-related person for 5 minutes. Someone like your sibling, parent, school friend, spouse, the person who serves you coffee every day, or anyone you think of first. Simply asking about their day and life would make you feel lighter.

These have helped keep me sane. How about you?
