How to Take Better Headshots
How to Take better Headshots
Need a great headshot? You already know that going to a professional will be your best bet at an awesome outcome. But if you MUST do it yourself, here are some tips and tricks that will help you with your headshot selfie.
1. Use a tripod. Even if you’re using your cell phone to take the picture, you should use a tripod, or at the very least, a selfie stick. This is because your cell phone is a wide angle lens and the further you get from it, the less distortion you have. Don’t have a tripod or selfie stick? Hand a friend the camera and ask them to step back a couple feet.
2. Work the Angle. You’re not taking a mug shot – you’re taking a headshot. You need to look good. Do NOT stand facing the camera. Turn your feet about 45 degrees to one direction or the other, then bring just your shoulders back to facing forward (not quite all the way though). Then bring your FACE forward. This turn of your neck will make your image more dynamic and create a much more flattering shadow and angle on your jawline.
3. Light up your face. You need to be facing light. If you’re indoors, then set your camera or phone on a window ledge and have your face toward the window light. It will create a soft, diffused light for your face.
4. Check your background. Make sure there isn’t clutter behind you. Also, don’t stand right against a wall. You want space behind you and your background.
5. Take LOTS of pictures. Most ladies already know this, but if you take 30 images, ONE of the will be your favorite. With technology being what it is, go ahead and take lots of pictures until you get it just right.
