Pandemic-era remote work has had a lasting impact on workers. LinkedIn data shows that companies around the world are seeking to balance employee demand for flexibility with a return to the office by offering hybrid work models.
Hybrid work has many advantages for both employers and employees. For companies, it can reduce costs and attract talent from a wider pool. For workers, there are work-life balance benefits and enhanced autonomy. It can also foster diversity and inclusion, enabling people from different backgrounds, locations and perspectives to work together.
In this edition of the newsletter, career experts share tips on tailoring your CV to showcase your relevant skills, experience and achievements to land a hybrid role.
If you're looking for hybrid work, "don't waste time applying to office-based roles", says Amy McCrow , a senior consultant in recruiting. "Apply only to roles that align with your remote or hybrid working preferences."
Sending out applications and not hearing back is the number one frustration for candidates that McCrow meets. Her advice is to always take a strategic approach, as it can significantly improve your chances of securing interviews. "Stay focused, relevant and responsive to stand out to potential employers," she says.
Before you apply, it's also important to understand why the role is hybrid in the first place, says Samia Hasan, founder of Unwind the Grind. She suggests asking yourself the following questions: How does the company perceive the role? And what tasks does it deem suitable for the setting?
"Then highlight your skills and achievements in those areas," she says. "You want to come across as a leader – proactive, communicative, collaborative, structured, adaptable and agile, one who gets results in any environment and builds relationships."
Even if you don’t have direct hybrid work experience, you should showcase your transferable skills, says Ahmed El bouazzaoui, an HR consultant. Skills such as adaptability, communication, collaboration and a willingness to learn are highly valued in hybrid environments, so make sure you outline these clearly on your CV. "Express enthusiasm for hybrid work and demonstrate a positive attitude towards adapting to new environments," he adds.
Emphasise a blend of skills and experience that are relevant to both aspects of the role – remote and in-office work, says Majdouline Brahimi, an HR director. By doing so, you will convey your readiness and ability to excel in both environments, she says.
Brahimi recommends including examples of the following capabilities and experience:
Keep your CV to one to two pages and mention your preference for flexible work, says Nada Fahim, a senior talent acquisition specialist, adding that you should prioritise employers that offer hybrid work models in your job search.
It's also useful to learn about an organisation's external brand and internal culture, according to this Wired article. One thing to consider is whether a company has traditionally embraced hybrid work or is just beginning to offer flexibility.
Some signs that show a company has truly embraced the hybrid work model, according to Wired:
