How to switch industries/roles mid-career or pick up a side hustle
If you start your career somewhere and decide you want to pivot, it can be scary to know what to do.
This is for you :)
Start where you are
Does your current employer have other roles you may be interested in? Setting up meetings with people there to learn more about what they do is a great way to easily understand what their day-to-day looks like. There may even be scope for you to help on a project or shadow them on some of their meetings.
Another great source at your current employer might be through a business resource group/employee resource group. These groups are volunteer led, and can allow you to develop skills you may not get to work on in your current role.
Look up volunteer opportunities?
www.volunteermatch.org is great for this. You can select skills you already have as well as skills you want to develop, and gain experience while volunteering. Adding these experiences to your resume will help show that you've done work in this area even if it's not what you went to school for or what your current job consists of.

Cold reach out?
While working at IBM, my current boss at Humor That Works was part of a virtual event IBM had. I was intrigued by the company and messaged the Humor That Works instagram account seeing if they were open to taking on a voluntary intern. I was able to build a relationship with them, and when their current social media person was leaving for a different job, I was able to easily transition in.
