How to Survive Small Talk This Thanksgiving

How to Survive Small Talk This Thanksgiving

Main Idea: With the current state of affairs both domestically and abroad, making small talk these days can be like walking through a minefield.? The key to not only surviving but thriving with these conversations this Thanksgiving is preparation.

If you are like most of the Italian professionals that I work with, you are probably not a big fan of small talk.? Many clients often tell me that they don’t like it, it feels fake, and they would prefer to avoid it.? Some dread it and just want to get it over with. ? But there are many benefits to making small talk that can improve your well-being, both at work and in your personal life.

As the U.S. has become more divided by conflicts both at home and abroad, engaging in small talk now takes more skill than ever. ? You can’t be sure if you and the person you are talking to share the same opinions. The best way to handle small talk is to have some topics and strategies in mind before speaking with others. Prepare by reviewing the strategies listed below. That way you can have successful conversations at work, and around the Thanksgiving table.

The Power of Small Talk: A Communication Essential

Small talk, or "chiacchiere" in Italian, might seem like an inconsequential part of daily interactions, but it holds significant weight not only in the American professional landscape. It's the social glue that binds individuals, fostering relationships and creating connections that extend beyond the confines of the workplace.

In the context of the U.S., small talk often revolves around shared experiences, interests, and yes, the weather. However, as we all know, the current climate in the United States is marked by a certain level of tension and division. This begs the question: How can we engage in meaningful small talk, especially during Thanksgiving, without inadvertently stepping into contentious territory?

Thanksgiving Small Talk: A Delicate Dance

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, reflection, and unity. It's a moment to come together, despite differing opinions, and find common ground. Let's explore some strategies to navigate small talk gracefully during this Thanksgiving season:

1. Focus on Common Ground:

Begin conversations by highlighting shared experiences or interests. Whether it's a love for good food, appreciation for the autumn season, or excitement for the upcoming holiday festivities, finding common ground lays the foundation for positive interactions

Sometimes a “Remark, Reveal, Request” strategy works well.? This involves remarking on something, revealing a bit about yourself, and then requesting information from the other person.

For example: “The fall foliage lately has been amazing (remark). I've really been enjoying colors.? They remind me of the beautiful autumns back when I was growing up in Italy (reveal). How about you (request)?”?

2. Express Gratitude:

Given the Thanksgiving theme, expressing gratitude is not only appropriate but also a powerful way to steer conversations toward positivity. Share your appreciation for colleagues, friends, or even the opportunities you've encountered in the U.S.

For example: “I am so grateful for all the amazing people I have met since I moved here.? How about you?? What are you thankful for this year?”

3. Discuss Neutral Topics:

If you sense a potential minefield in certain topics, steer clear and opt for neutral subjects. Movies, books, travel, and hobbies often provide safe havens for enjoyable conversations without delving into divisive issues.

For example: "Have you traveled anywhere recently? I'm always on the lookout for new places to explore.”

4. Listen Actively:

A key component of successful small talk is active listening. Pay attention to the nuances of the conversation, and respond thoughtfully. This not only fosters connection but also allows you to navigate away from potentially sensitive topics.

For example:? "That's an interesting perspective. I hadn't considered it from that angle. How did you come to that conclusion?"

5. Humor as a Unifier:

Humor, when used carefully, can serve as a great unifier. Shared laughter can break down barriers and create a positive atmosphere. However, be mindful of cultural differences in humor.

For example, share something from a funny movie or television series that you watched and find out if anyone is familiar with it.

6.? Speaking of Funny…

People love to talk about the latest series they’ve been binge-watching on Netflix or other platforms.? It can make you feel more a part of the group if you know what they are talking about.? Here is a list of some funny shows that are streaming right now that will help you make small talk with Americans this Thanksgiving.? You have a little less than 2 weeks to catch up! ??

Here are some that I have heard are popular, but not yet seen:

“Beef”(Netflix)

“Wednesday” (Netflix)

“Documentary Now” (AMC +)

I have seen these and can confidently recommend:

“Ted Lasso”-? (Apple)

“Cunk on Earth” (Netflix)

I suggest you do some research about the most popular comedy shows as your taste might be different than mine.? This is also a lovely excuse for doing nothing productive!

Conclusion: Building Bridges Through Conversation

In these times of heightened sensitivity, our ability to navigate small talk with finesse is more crucial than ever. Thanksgiving, with its focus on gratitude and unity, provides a unique opportunity to build bridges through conversation.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with meaningful connections and enriching conversations!
