How to supercharge your career in partnerships - learnings from 542 channel chiefs

How to supercharge your career in partnerships - learnings from 542 channel chiefs

Three weeks ago I shared the (disappointing) demographic data on the 2025 edition of the CRN Channel Chiefs list (Link: https://lnkd.in/eKChw7Vd). To say it landed with a "thud" is an understatement.

Just check out this conclusion on how (the data tells you) to get to the top:

"Be a 49-year-old male with a bachelor’s degree, live in San Francisco, change companies 5 times while pursuing sales roles, be ready to move cities several times, and be mindful of company size."

I was happy when Gurpreet Kaur from HP reached out to me wanting to dig deeper into the career path that those of us in channels, partnerships, alliances, and ecosystems are on.

This blog is the result of our collaboration and generates a new (10 part) conclusion:

There are 10 distinct skills (and actions) to reach the top of the partnership career mountain.

First, some context.

The world of channel partnerships and alliances is shifting fast, and in 2025, climbing the career ladder isn’t just about grinding harder - it’s about working smarter. Picture this: you’re not just aiming for a promotion; you’re building a reputation as someone who gets it done, no matter the challenge.

With over 70% of world trade flowing indirectly and upwards of 96% of the tech industry "partner assisted", these are not just skills for channel folks, but for senior leadership across every company.

Data tells us that the path to top leadership roles is shifting. On average, career progression timelines are compressing, with leaders moving from mid-level roles to top positions in just 2.4 years compared to the previous 10-year trajectory. To accelerate your career, focus on these 10 critical rules that will position you for success.

?

1. Master Cross-Functional Collaboration

Success in 2025 isn’t about shining solo in your corner — it’s about seeing the whole puzzle and helping fit the pieces together. Companies today thrive when teams sync up like a well-rehearsed band, not a bunch of solo acts. A recent McKinsey study indicates that organizations implementing team-focused transformations can achieve efficiency gains of up to 30%, particularly when cross-functional teams collaborate to tackle complex challenges. Imagine being the person who gets marketing and ops talking, turning chaos into a smooth jam that hits company goals. In fact, companies with well-integrated partnerships see a 76% higher success rate in strategic initiatives, according to Accenture. When you can connect the dots across departments and drive innovation, leadership takes notice—and that’s your ticket to career acceleration.

2. Build Influence & Establish a Strong Personal Brand – Be Omnipresent

Your voice matters more than ever in 2025. It’s not what you know - it’s who knows you know it. Leaders who post thought leadership content weekly on LinkedIn see a 94% increase in profile views, according to a 2024 Cognism study of 1 billion users.

Step up by sharing your take on industry shifts—post on LinkedIn, write a quick article, or speak at a conference. An interesting read “Why Thought Leadership Matters in Channels” says it best: elevate others, and you rise. Beyond the screen, grab coffee with peers, mentor a newbie, or chat up a decision-maker at an event. It’s not about a huge Rolodex; it’s about trust. When folks see you as the go-to person who lifts everyone up, you’re not just in the room—you’re unforgettable.

Influence = promotion.

3. Invest in Continuous Learning & Industry Evolution

The workforce is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and those who fail to keep up risk being left behind. A report by the World Economic Forum predicts that by 2025, 50% of all employees will need reskilling due to technological advancements and changing job roles. IDC further supports this, reporting that professionals who continuously improve their skills earn 47% more over their careers compared to those who don’t.

Platform companies now prioritize employees who demonstrate perpetual learning, ensuring they remain valuable assets in a changing landscape. To proactively navigate these changes, consider the following actionable steps and resources: Enroll in professional development courses, attend industry conferences and workshops, join the board of professional organizations and associations, and pursue certifications, competencies, and much more.

The takeaway? Knowledge isn’t just power—it’s your competitive advantage. Level up your game!

4. Embrace AI & Automation to Drive Efficiency

AI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s your new best friend at work. Don’t wait for someone to hand you the reins—jump in and lead the charge. Maybe you’re the one who finds an AI tool that cuts reporting time in half or streamlines partner workflows. Stay curious, test new tools, and show how you’re making life easier and smarter. When you’re the efficiency hero, CIOs and bosses alike take note.

Agentic AI is already transforming lead generation, deal management, and partner enablement. Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that exhibit a high degree of autonomy, adaptability, and goal-oriented behavior. Unlike traditional AI, which relies on predefined rules or human intervention for decision-making, agentic AI can independently plan, execute tasks, and optimize workflows based on evolving conditions. Channel pros win with it: AI can qualify leads (50% faster, per Salesforce), personalize outreach (80% higher open rates, HubSpot), manage deals (30% faster closes, McKinsey), train partners, and analyze performance.

By automating routine tasks, providing personalized support, and offering data-driven insights, agentic AI can empower channel partner professionals to be more efficient, effective, and successful in their roles.

Ironic note - the last sentence was written by AI :-)

5. Own Strategic Projects & Solve High-Impact Problems

The fastest way to stand out as a Channel Chief in 2025 is to take ownership of strategic projects that solve real business challenges. In today’s evolving channel landscape, where 76% of executives believe collaboration is critical to long-term success (Accenture, 2023), leaders who drive ecosystem-led initiatives will emerge as industry pioneers. Don’t wait for directives—identify gaps, optimize partner enablement, and innovate solutions that boost revenue and retention.

For instance, implementing AI-powered partner analytics can streamline lead generation and deal management, while redefining go-to-market strategies or building seamless cross-vendor integrations can unlock new growth opportunities. Leaders who drive strategic initiatives with clear business outcomes are 2.5 times more likely to be identified as high-potential talent, according to a 2024 McKinsey survey of 500 global executives. When you deliver measurable wins—like doubling deal sizes or cutting costs by 15%—you’re not just a manager; you’re the architect of success.

Position yourself as the go-to leader for the future of channel ecosystems—and the kind of Channel Chief who lands the corner office.

6. Adapt, Pivot, and Lead in a Rapidly Changing World

In a world where the pace of change has accelerated exponentially, the ability to adapt, pivot, and lead is no longer optional—it’s the defining trait of successful leaders. The AI-driven economy has compressed timelines, with breakthroughs like DeepSeek and Stargate reshaping industries overnight, while global disruptions such as new tariffs, regulatory shifts, and hybrid work models demand agility and resilience.

According to a 2024 report by McKinsey, 92% of executives now identify adaptability as the most critical leadership skill for navigating today’s volatile business environment. For instance, during the pandemic, companies like Microsoft and Zoom pivoted rapidly to meet surging demand for remote collaboration tools, securing their positions as market leaders. As highlighted in Harvard Business Review’s article on Leading Through Disruption, the leaders who succeed are those who can balance short-term agility with long-term vision.

By embracing change, taking calculated risks, and driving innovation, you’ll not only future-proof your career but also position yourself as an indispensable leader in a rapidly evolving world.

7. Drive Business Impact: Align Your Work with Measurable Outcomes

In 2025, leaders aren’t just contributors - they are business strategists who drive measurable outcomes. According to a 2024 McKinsey report, organizations that align individual performance with broader business goals see a 30% higher likelihood of achieving above-market growth.

To secure your promotion, go beyond internal metrics and tie your work directly to revenue generation, cost reduction, and market expansion. For example, one standout project could involve linking partner activities outside the point of sale to your company’s success metrics. To stand out, leverage data-driven insights to optimize partnerships for scalability and reliability.

For instance, if a partner’s efforts result in a 15% reduction in CAC or a 10% increase in deal size, ensure these metrics are clearly reported and tied to your company’s financial performance. This approach not only elevates you from an operational player to a strategic driver but also positions you as the go-to leader for ecosystem-led growth.

By aligning your work with measurable outcomes, you’re not just chasing a promotion - you’re redefining what it means to deliver value in the channel ecosystem.

8. Communicate with Precision, Influence, and Impact

In 2025, communication isn’t just about clarity—it’s a strategic tool for influence and impact. According to a 2024 Forbes survey, 91% of executives prioritize communication that cuts through the noise, underscoring the need for precision and relevance. Turn dense data into “here’s why it matters” narratives: imagine flipping a partner update into a tale of 20% revenue lift that has the room buzzing.

To stand out, you must deeply understand your audience—partners, buyers, industries, and geographies—and tailor every interaction to resonate with their unique needs. Whether delivering data-packed slides or casual pitches, your message must be sharp, action-driven, and memorable. The article crew.vc highlights the power of storytelling in channel marketing, demonstrating how compelling narratives can drive business expansion.

By translating complex concepts into engaging stories, leaders can captivate stakeholders and drive strategic decisions. Embracing data-driven storytelling and honing the art of persuasive communication not only enhances team alignment but also solidifies one's position as an indispensable leader in the organization.

9. Own Your Career Trajectory with Intentional Action

Gone are the days of waiting for a promotion to land in your lap - career success in 2025 demands bold moves, adaptability, and a network that works as hard as you do. To rise as a Channel Chief, grab the reins—chase stretch projects like revamping a partner program, dive into industry hubs like GTIA - Global Technology Industry Association (former CompTIA), and build a circle of mentors, peers, and partners who amplify your game.

Your career is your product, and the people you surround yourself with can make or break your trajectory. The power of network effects cannot be overstated. A robust network unlocks access to the hidden job market, where 70-80% of roles are filled through referrals, and provides insider knowledge to navigate industries and roles with confidence.?In essence, networking expands your reach, deepens your insights, and strengthens relationships, transforming your career into a dynamic, opportunity-rich journey.?

By actively building and nurturing your network, you enhance your career prospects and open doors to new possibilities that might otherwise remain inaccessible. Leaders who take ownership of their career path don’t just stay ahead of the curve - they redefine it.

10. Navigate Evolving Demographics and Career Paths

The leadership scene’s changing fast. Back in 2016, Channel Chiefs averaged 49 years old, 77% male, with 8.7 years at one company. By 2025, a CRN study shows they’re younger (mid-40s), more diverse (45% women), and switch gigs every 2-3 years. This shift reflects broader trends: SaaS companies, for instance, are now close to 50-50 in gender diversity, though challenges remain—only 20% of SaaS is resold, and 85% of channel sales leaders are still male, according to recent industry reports.

To thrive in this dynamic environment, professionals must embrace flexibility, continuous learning, and inclusivity. The surge in Chief Partner Officer roles and the rise of women in (Fortune 100) leadership positions—like Ruba Borno at Amazon Web Services (AWS) , Nicole Dezen at 微软 , Kate Woolley at IBM , Denise Millard at Dell Technologies —highlight the importance of breaking traditional molds. These leaders are redefining success by leveraging strategic alliances, tech partnerships, and equitable practices. Hyperscalers are leading the charge, with 2/3 of top roles now held by women.

While demographics and human psychology play a role, the key to advancement lies in adaptability and strategic career choices. Focus on emerging trends like cloud technologies, where channel reliance is diminishing, and explore opportunities in tech alliances and strategic partnerships.

By staying attuned to these shifts, fostering diverse perspectives, and positioning yourself as a forward-thinking leader, you can navigate the complexities of modern career paths and achieve sustained success.

Final Thoughts: Be the One They Can’t Ignore

In 2025, the workforce rewards those who move fast, speak up, and deliver real value. Think of it like this: everyday is a chance to show you’re not just part of the team—you’re the spark that makes it better. Leverage tech, build influence, and keep your eyes on the prize.

Ready to take charge? Your next promotion is waiting.

Jay McBain this work and article is what the channel NEEDS for transformation to happen! Thank you! ???? I’m still hopeful as I like to live in the positive with the glass half full rather than empty. Although the punches sting a little more each year that goes by - I’m still pushing for change. I have two ambitious hardworking adult girls and I want their future to look different than mine. Your very articulate article is a breath of fresh air pointing out the largest elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. ??
