How to Successfully Pitch Your Photography or Design Project to Publications

Getting your creative projects published can feel daunting, especially for artists who don’t have an active network. Over the years, photographers have asked me how I’ve gotten published in various newspapers or magazines. I’m sharing this post as a guide for others. Yes, you can get your personal design or photography project published, and editors are constantly looking for fresh, innovative work.

Here’s how:

1. Research Your Audience

Research the publication and identify the correct editor for the vertical you’re targeting. Some editors and publications have specific pitching instructions—if so, follow them. If not, tailor your pitch to the publication’s audience. Publications thrive on relevance, so highlight why your work is a perfect fit for their readership.

2. Create a Captivating Subject Line

Your subject line is your first impression—make it irresistible. Highlight what makes your project newsworthy or unique. If your pitch is time-sensitive, start the subject line with URGENT or Time Sensitive to grab attention.

3. Tell a Story but Keep It Concise

Weave a compelling narrative about your work:

  • Why does it matter?
  • What inspired it?
  • How does it connect to larger cultural conversations?

That said, keep it short—well under half a page. Editors are busy, so make your pitch easy to read.

4. Provide Visuals

A picture is worth a thousand words—include a few high-quality images or a link to your digital portfolio. Since you’re pitching a visual story, your visuals should take center stage.

5. Include a Call-to-Action

Be specific about what you’re seeking: an article, a feature, or an interview. Provide your contact information and make it easy for the editor to follow up.

6. Follow Up Politely

Silence doesn’t always mean rejection. A polite follow-up a week or two later can bring your pitch back to the forefront of the editor’s mind.

Pitching is an art form, and persistence pays off. Once you’ve done it a few times, it’s less scary, and once you’ve been published in a few places, if you’re lucky, publications will start coming to you! If you’re proud of your project, it’s worth sharing it!
