How To Be A Successful Digital Marketer

Digital marketing has grown into a massive industry that brings in billions of dollars every year. With so much money at stake, it's no wonder that many businesses want to get involved with digital marketing. However, there are thousands of people who want to work as digital marketers but aren't sure how to break into the field. In this article we'll cover what makes someone a successful digital marketer and how they can make their first steps toward becoming one!

Define your goals

It's important to set goals for yourself and your team, because it will help you determine what you want to accomplish.

You should consider the following questions:

  • What are the goals of a digital marketer?
  • What are the goals of your business?
  • How can you help achieve these things together with your audience

Research your audience

When you're starting out as a digital marketer, it's important to understand your audience. You need to know what they want and how you can help them. If you don't know who your target market is or what their challenges are, then how will you be able to create content for them?

When I say "target market", I'm referring to those people who have an interest in what it is that you do and could potentially buy from your business if given the opportunity. This could be customers or potential customers (depending on whether or not they already buy from companies similar).

Understand their challenges

The first step to becoming a successful digital marketer is to understand the challenges your audience faces.

  • Know what questions they are asking.
  • Know what problems they have.
  • Understand their goals and objectives, as well as what keeps them up at night (their fears).

Create a plan of action

As you're setting your goals, it's important to define the problem before you start on a solution. For example: "I want to get in shape" is not a goal; it's a wishful statement that doesn't tell you what you need to do next or when you plan on doing it. Instead of saying "I want" and leaving it at that, try setting some goals that are tangible and measurable so that they can be achieved (or not).

Develop an information architecture strategy

The next step to becoming a successful digital marketer is to develop an information architecture strategy. Information architecture is the organization of content on your website or app, so that users can find what they're looking for quickly and easily.

  • What kinds of pages do I want? Do I need a landing page? How many categories should I have? Should each category have subcategories? Can people filter by price or color? Will there be any special offers available at certain times of year (i.e., holiday sales)? These are just some examples; there are plenty more questions like these that come up when developing an IA strategy!
  • Once you've answered these basic questions in your mind, it's time to put pen-to-paper (or fingers-to-keyboard). The easiest way I've found is using Google Drawings because it allows me to draw shapes quickly without having to worry about making mistakes while trying something new every time.


Digital marketing can be a great career choice, but you need to know what you're doing.
