There are a thousand ways to improve your communication. You can always take initiative by opening a casual conversation in a way that creates mutual respect. You should pay attention to choosing words that set your conversation partner at ease. It indirectly assures him you have positive intentions.
Have a purpose before proceeding to have a conversation. The useful purpose is the one you should favor.
To own control over a conversation, you need to be careful about your reaction. You can passionately share your views, but you need to learn about understanding the other person’s view. Arriving at a sustainable solution should always be your goal.
The examples for futile purposes of conversation are, trying to change other person’s views, attempting to control how they react to your views or having a hidden agenda.
One way to make your conversation exciting is by being interested in it. No tool in the communication box is as effective as a curiosity. Enter a conversation with a beginner’s mind, you will adopt the attitude of a learner. You won’t pretend when asking honest, open questions, they’ll come naturally with the flow.
As you find the conversation interesting, you’ll also be an active listener, you’ll reflect on what is being said. You’ll gain information, easing tension and confusion.
Most of the time, we’re not curious because we mentally equate curiosity with an agreement. It is hardwired in our thinking that if we don’t disagree immediately, our conversation partner will assume we’re okay with his stance. This is not beneficial for thinking. You’ll miss an opportunity to view the whole picture, and to understand where your partner is coming from.
In a difficult conversation, always choose to give yourself and your partner a gift of asking questions, especially on the ones you don’t have clear answers to. Casually observe. You will learn a lot, you will feel empowered.
Keep in mind, listening does not mean equal agreement. It just means you are a skilled and active listener, along with being a conscious communicator. Always long to Live, Learn and enjoy the moment.
