How to Succeed in your Role in the New Year?

Whether you are embarking on a new role, got that promotion you deserved, or are gunning for it in the coming year, I want to share 3 tips to succeed.

1. Get Hyper focused on Key Priorities:

When was the last time you nailed down your top (or maximum top 3) priorities with your hiring manager?

If you have tried to have this conversation with your manager and received a generic, "You are doing great, just continue doing that" conversation, I would highly encourage you to dive deeper.

Ask your manager, apart from handling business as usual, what is the top most priority I can help you with in the coming quarter.


Don't assume that you know the job or if you are joining a new role that you have read the job description.


2. Chuck Expertise and use Support Network:

A critical mistake a lot of people make is to try and learn everything on their own. It gets lonely and you miss all the shortcuts available from the wisdom of someone who has done it.

So, if you have been asked to do something new, find people in your organization or your network who may have done a similar thing in the past.


Ask them how they went about with it and what resources you can use.

It is one of the best ways to build a network, and start creating advocates and allies for your work.


3. Reach out to your business stakeholders:

Again a conversation to have with your manager on who are the most important business stakeholders for your team.

Reach out to them, meet for a coffee, or simply a meeting to see how you/ your team can best support them in their goals.


Honestly, you don't need to do everything in their wishlist, but this may help you generate some brilliant ideas.

At the least, it makes these stakeholders feel heard.
