How Strong Is Your Ambition?

Do you think often about your “career”? Where you want to go? Where you want to end up? Do you consciously feel “ambitious”? Or do you take for granted that you’re employed with a good job and glad to have fulfilling work?
Now there’s nothing wrong with gratitude and appreciation for what you do “to make a living”. However, you can get stuck there and then in a few years feel frustrated that you’re not making progress. That’s never fun.
I’ve worked with all too many people who say, “I’m not sure what I want after this. I’ve never thought about my future.” It always arouses my concern so some of my coaching is then focused on awakening ambition, whatever is involved to get there.
Sometimes, the person’s family of origin was unskilled, and as the daughter or son they have advanced way beyond anything their parents had ever dreamed of. Sometimes, everything has come so easy—graduate school and being hired—that they’ve had no need to dream big. And sometimes they are so comfortable in their current job they hesitate to think outside that box.
My husband Jim Sniechowski, PhD and I both come from working class families and long before we knew each other we’d had some serious success as professional actors. But, did we have ambition? No. Probably had rarely even heard the word and certainly not at our dinner tables. In fact, we both walked away from acting, leaving countless opportunities to go unexplored and vanished.
That’s one of the main reasons we both care so much about helping others identify and pursue their ambitions.
What about you? How have you related to ambition?
****** For a great read that relates to the topic of ambition, my husband Jim’s second novel in his Leaving Home Trilogy An Ambition to Belong has just been released on Amazon in Audiobook and is also available in kindle and paperback! It also makes for a great gift for anyone interested in life passages as well.

5 年Sometimes we need a reason to be ambitious, it's hard to sustain if we just have ambition for the sake of it. Find your why. Once we do (have a reason) ?? it's easier to stay motivated and focused
