How Stress Can Impact Oral Health

How Stress Can Impact Oral Health

Stress can take a toll on your body in unexpected ways, including your oral health. Although stress is commonly linked to emotional pain, it can impact your teeth and gums. By understanding how stress can impact your oral health can help you protect your teeth during these tough times.

Bruxism, more commonly known as teeth grinding is one of the most common effects of stress. Many people grind or clench their teeth without realizing it and over time this can wear down the enamel and cause tooth sensitivity and may even lead to cracked teeth or jaw pain. Using a night guard can help prevent any further damage.

Additionally, stress can cause xerostomia (also known as dry mouth) where your mouth doesn't produce enough saliva. Saliva is essential for neutralizing acids and washing away bacteria, so xerostomia can increase the risk of cavities and periodontal (gum) disease. Staying hydrated, chewing sugar-free, xylitol gum and avoiding caffeine/ alcohol can help keep your mouth moist.

By managing stress and maintaining good oral care habits, such as staying hydrated and protecting your teeth, you can keep your smile healthy—even during life’s most stressful moments.
