How will the story of "mother of eight in Xuzhou" end?

Just after the Lunar New Year, I have been bothered by the story of "The Mother of Eight Children in Xuzhou" that was widely spread on the Internet. The news was immediately exposed in the mainstream media and gained attentions more than ordinary news. As a non-profit organization that focuses on humanitarian, especially as a woman, it is difficult for me to remain silent about this news. When I saw the photo of the victim chained to a dilapidated shack, the face that looked older than her actual age, my shock was beyond description.

The version of the story from internet news is roughly like this: 24 years ago, Li Ying, a 6th-grade elementary school girl in Sichuan, an only child who was doted on by her parents, was abducted by traffickers on her way to school and sold to Feng County, Xuzhou, where she became so called "wife" but actually sex slave of a family of three man surnamed Dong. She tried to escape but was knocked out of her teeth and drugged to ruin her voice, she was chained and locked up like a dog in a shabby cabin, served as a reproductive tool for 24 years, until she was driven mad and gave birth to 8 children. I don't dare to imagine the various tortures she has been through over the past 24 years. I think that anyone with a little humanity will be as eager as me to know the truth of the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice. However, the development of things was disappointing. Not only did the husband who persecuted the woman become the speaker man for the local government to encourage more children, volunteers who went to the village to seek the truth were blocked, and the local official media reported Different versions: Her real name, family background, and conflicting explanations have been deliberately withheld, making people doubt the sincerity of the authorities in resolving this matter. It is said that such cases of abducting women and even minors from other places and selling them to poor men as sex slaves have become very common in this village, and there are more miserable women than her who have even died during the persecution. And even the local authorities officers are involved in these criminal transactions. I believe it's not because of ignorance, but because there are financial interests behind it, because the price of buying a woman is much lower than the dowry money for marrying a normal wife, and according to legal cases, the punishment for human trafficking is even lower than the penalties of selling animals. Li Ying's incident is just the tip of the iceberg presented by the dark forces of human trafficking.

China's population control policy over the past years has left many families with only one child, and generations rely on one child to support their old age. If the child is lost, it will almost destroy a family. According to reports, after Li Ying disappeared, her father (a veteran who served for his country for years )died of excessive grief of losing his only child, while her mother remarried to someone else, a good family was torn apart like this. According to official statistics, the number of missing persons in China in 2020 is one million, and we can imagine how many fall-apart families are still behind this number. If the men of a village have to rely on human trafficking to achieve the purpose that they can reproduce, then shouldn't the relevant management departments be held responsible? Why is it the people who suffer and pay for every wrong decision and policy?

A Chinese writer once said: This kind of behavior is legally wrong, but if you don't buy a wife, the whole village will perish. What an understatement and what a shameful thought. Here, I just want to say that if you ignore the pain of others and use any means to bring disaster to others in order to satisfy your own desires, then such a race will let it perish, because they are not worth to be called human beings at all.

In Chinese character, the meaning of the word "HUMAN" ie "人" is to support each other. It is a terrible thing to live in a society that has lost its humanity and morality. What hope does a country have if it acts as a governing body to condone crime and become an accomplice to it?

Eight years ago, I invested and supported a director to make an independent film about the a story happed in Chinese countryside. Our film received a lot of attention at the Berlin Film Festival, but to our surprise, the film did not get approved to screen in China. The director himself has no way to return to China now. Because it attacked the country's one-child policy at the time, even though it is a fictional story.

Is it an ironic fact that Li Ying's father, as a retired soldier, who defended the country's security but was unable to protect his own daughter and families security? We have modern technology and weapons, we have a strong army and law enforcement, we can develop artificial intelligence, biological genes and other high-tech means to expand our world to alien planets and even into the next century, but we cannot protect the weak for their basic human rights, we cannot even guarantee that every parent's child can come home safely. Everyday, We have to worry about the safety of our family members. Is this the tragedy of our society?

It is our responsibility and conscience to care for and protect the vulnerable. As a media, non-profit organization, and social influencers, if we can't speak for the vulnerable, who else will? If a government with all the power that are authorized by their people cannot do justice for the weak, then who else can do justice for them?

Like I expected, this post does not get much attention, because people normally don’t put their likes on bad news. I have heard recent updates that her life is in danger now, because there is sb don’t want to reveal the truth. Remember, this news had over 10 billion clicks in medias, which means there are at least billion people knows about it. However, it looks no one can save her even her own mother, all she needs is to go home get her own home and set free from this ridiculous fake marriage, is it really that hard to do so? How much will it cost to get her a freedom and be treated at a regular hospital outside of that town? I would like to know and provide help.. if the price they paid for her is just as much as a few animals, I’d like to pay it off for her. A few more days later, it is going to be Women’s Day, I wish we can set her free before that day, will she live to see that day coming? If she cannot, I feel shame for all of us.
