We've all been guilty of negative self—talk that can be damaging and prevent us from achieving our goals. Whether we label ourselves as "hopeless cases" or see ourselves as "villains" or "victims," this inner dialogue is a way we sabotage ourselves. Fortunately, there is a way to combat these thoughts and use mindfulness and awareness to contact our actual situation with blameless discernment. Let's take a look at how to stop sabotaging yourself with negative self-talk.?
The first step in stopping your self-sabotage is releasing judgmental thoughts about yourself. Doing this isn't easy, especially when the inner critic's voice says something is wrong with you. But if you accept that voice, you must constantly look outside yourself for something better than you are, a search that can continue indefinitely. The key here is to focus on your progress rather than comparing yourself to others — because no two people are alike! Acknowledge your achievements and let go of negativity about your current situation.?
Also, self-compassion plays a significant role in stopping negative self-talk. Speak kindly to yourself in moments of failure or disappointment — just like you would speak kindly to someone you care about if they were going through the same experience. Try not to be too hard on yourself when things don't go as planned. Instead, be kind and gentle, knowing that setbacks are part of life and everyone experiences them at some point or another. Remember that fears often arise from feeling vulnerable, so practice being kinder whenever those feelings occur.??

Mindfulness has also been shown to help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by helping people become more aware of their thoughts and emotions in the present moment without judgment or criticism. Taking time each day for mindful practice such as yoga or meditation can help you focus on what's happening right now instead of worrying about what might happen in the future (which is often where our negative thoughts come from). Practicing mindfulness can also help you cultivate gratitude for all aspects of your life — big or small — which will help combat negative self-talk before it takes hold.??
