How To Stop Procrastination!

How to kick the princess of procrastination out of bed to eliminate overwhelm and embrace the queen of productivity!

This is a fundamental challenge if you struggle to embody absolute self-commitment.

Now, what most conscious leaders do is focus on the actions that are the easiest to complete for a sense of accomplishment or feel they're getting their best bang for their buck.

Perhaps they're even soul-driven activities, but it's most often not focused on the strategic objective of why it needs to be done.

So, you continue doing task after task and that causes you to feel good about your daily output, but it doesn't get you the business progress you desire.

We're going to fix that exact problem so that you can focus on the less appealing strategic jobs with laser speed to finally free up your time and spend it on tasks that leverage your true gifts and bring you joy.

Here are five steps to get you out of procrastination:

1. You have to understand the beliefs that you're telling yourself about the past you're putting off, i.e. you need to understand the emotion that arises.

These are caused generally to avoid a feeling of disappointment. You don't believe you can do it well enough, you don't want to do it, it's outside your skill set or your joy set, you don't value the time of doing it, or you don't believe the results that will come from doing it.

2. Break the task down into smaller parts or steps.

Overwhelm is created when we only look at the efforts of the entire task in one go rather than breaking them down into smaller sub tasks.

3. Consciously give a time allocation to each step.

Often we tell ourselves a job is gonna take hours, but when we truly think about the smaller parts, it's often way less time than we originally thought.

4. Now, it's time to REFRAME.

Why does it need to be done? What is the benefit of doing this yucky task? Are those sub-tasks really that bad if you spread them out? What could be passed on to someone else? Do you even really need to do them all?

5. Give attention to visualize what you're winning result would be.

If it's to write an article, imagine three leads direct messaging you after the result of reading them. If it's to schedule your social media posts, imagine that dream number of comments that would make the effort worthwhile to you.

Consider what the new feeling is, that you can associate the undesirable task.

So there you have it, five simple steps to get you out of procrastination.

When you master breaking down unpleasant jobs, you'll be able to find a feminine way of doing them rather than a masculine smashing through them until it's done.

I’ve found this masculine pushing usually leads to a substandard quality, which for you perfectionists is even more of a problem. Focus on doing it well once by project managing the task.

It's part of our job to at least know all of the parts of running a business and how long they take so when we outsource what doesn't fit in our genius zone, we truly know how long they're gonna take.

We can then start to reasonably trust others to do the actions for us without taking advantage.

Now, I have two bonus hacks I used with larger mind-numbing jobs.

  • I gamify. I reward myself with mini-milestones, I give myself a little block of chocolate.
  • I also take a five-minute break every 20 minutes.

Most stages of a task can be completed in 20 minutes of disciplined concentration. At least I'm plodding through it and I'm taking care of doing it as best I can before my mind talked me out of doing it and I want to quit altogether.

But, just be careful not to allow the breaks to take over the task.

I use my stopwatch timer on my phone for the 20 minutes and the five-minute segments.

Consider in 4-5 hours you could have accomplished 12 productive time segments and have 12 breaks.
