How to stop Procrastinating
You're not alone—we all procrastinate sometimes. It's just part of being human!
But when we start to let it get out of control, it can lead to some serious problems. Here's how to stop procrastinating:
Procrastination is often the result of stress, which can lead us into fight or freeze mode. When we go into freeze mode from overwhelm, we can end up spending too much time thinking about what we need to do rather than taking any action. This overthinking clouds our minds with a long list of things that need to be done, which makes it hard for us to focus on one task at a time and finish what we start.
The easiest thing to do first becomes the first thing we tackle leaving the difficult tasks for later—and then another day. Before we know it, the day is over and it's time for bed...but before you drift off, all those tasks haven't been completed and your mind is flooded with guilt and anxiety.?
Not getting proper rest or sleep makes us even less motivated to tackle tomorrow—and this cycle continues until something gives (usually our sanity!).?
1. Brain Dump- Get it all out. Ditch the paper it's 2023. Stop writing things down so they get lost and forgotten. Get all of your thoughts out of your head and down on your phone or computer for easy access.
(Pro Tip - Use Vervo app to create tasks out of your brain dump and integrate them into your schedule for effective planning.)
2. Pick one small action step for each to do
For example:
To do: find a new doctor
To Do with Action step: log in to my insurance and find a doctor within my network.
See the difference...this way you can take action with baby steps and make progress, get specific!
3. Prioritize with the rule of 3
Pick 3 things to focus on for the day, if everything is important nothing is important.
Now you have a plan for the day and action steps to complete your to-do's. As you take action, your anxiety will decrease along with your obsessive thoughts about what you need to do.
The more you practice prioritizing and planning the easier it will get for you.
Eventually, you can plan your whole week and before you know it you'll be crushing through your tasks and feeling great.?
