How To Stop Procrastinating

As entrepreneurs, we all face the temptation to procrastinate at times. It's a common challenge that can hold us back from achieving our goals. However, high-performing entrepreneurs have found ways to reframe their mindset and turn procrastination into productivity. In this newsletter, we'll explore a simple yet powerful technique that can help you go from procrastinating to taking consistent action.

The Power of Reframing Pain vs. Pleasure

Our brains are wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain. This instinct can work against us when it comes to tackling difficult tasks. Low performers tend to avoid pain in the moment, while high performers recognize that short-term discomfort is worth enduring to avoid greater pain in the future.

The key is to reframe your perspective. Instead of viewing a challenging task as something to be avoided, see it as a means to prevent more significant problems down the line. For example, rather than procrastinating on creating new content, remind yourself that doing it now will keep you top-of-mind with your audience and prevent a dip in engagement.

Connecting Short-Term Actions to Long-Term Goals

To effectively reframe your mindset, it's essential to have a clear understanding of your long-term goals. When you can directly link your daily actions to the achievement of your bigger objectives, you're more likely to push through the discomfort and take the necessary steps.

Ask yourself, "What will happen if I don't do this task right now?" Paint a vivid picture of the potential negative consequences, and then contrast that with the benefits of taking action. The more compelling the future pain or pleasure, the more motivation you'll have to overcome procrastination.

Putting it into Practice

The next time you find yourself tempted to procrastinate, pause and reflect. Identify the task at hand and consider how it connects to your long-term goals. Then, reframe the situation by asking yourself, "What will happen if I don't do this now?" Visualize the potential pain of inaction, and let that drive you to take the necessary steps.

Remember, becoming a high-performing entrepreneur is not about having superpowers - it's about leveraging the way your brain works to your advantage. With consistent practice, you can transform procrastination into a powerful tool for achieving your entrepreneurial dreams.

I believe that EVERYBODY PROCRASTINATES. Everybody. Procrastination is not doing what you should do when you should do it. Productive people (myself included) procrastinate, but we procrastinate much less than most others. The first step is to recognize that you're procrastinating. Procrastination can sneak up on you. For example, you need a new journal and spend several hours on Amazon looking for one. Or you need to pick a theme for your website, and you spend hours looking at your options. Sadly, most people's default is to procrastinate. I believe it's because they are not doing what they love to do. They're doing stuff they hate. Who wouldn't procrastinate in this situation?
