The Problem

Being a Salesforce Admin can feel overwhelming at times. After all, you are responsible for managing one of the essential tools in your company's sales arsenal.

In addition to keeping the system up and running, you must ensure that it is appropriately configured to meet your company's needs. On top of that, you also need to be able to troubleshoot any problems that users may be having.

As a Salesforce Administrator, you may feel isolated and unsupported by your manager or colleagues. They may not understand the level of expertise and time that goes into adequately configuring Salesforce to meet the business's specific needs.

As an Admin, you need to ensure that any enhancements will solve the problems at hand and that they will function as expected.

In addition, you need to ensure that the technology can meet the expectations of the business users.

This can take time and effort that business users may not be aware of or care about.

They simply want everything done immediately.

Many Salesforce Admins start their careers with the impression that they just need to learn Salesforce and get Admin certified in order to land a high-paying and rewarding job.

They were told that by getting certified and getting a job, they'll be able to solve business problems and be seen as a leader within the organization.

They were told that by learning Lightning, and Flows and how to create custom objects and custom page layouts, they can help companies thrive.

However, people who have pursued this path often come to realize that their jobs are filled with menial, random requests to update page layouts in Salesforce, import spreadsheets, and repeatedly customize Salesforce based on the whims of different business users.

This can be frustrating, especially if you're passionate about using your skills to make a difference in the company.

If you find yourself in this situation, it's important to remember that you have the power to change things.

The Solution

It can be frustrating when you're trying to help solve a business problem, but people focus all their attention on customizing the system instead.

I know this feeling all too well. I've found myself in many scenarios where people see me as the person who updates Salesforce, so they focus on updating the UI and customizing the system in ways that distract from solving the actual problem.

However, there is a way to address these issues and turn the situation around.

By using my framework, you can learn how to refocus the conversation on solving the business problem and avoid getting sidetracked by unnecessary customizations of Salesforce.

As a Salesforce Admin, when you reframing each

  • justification that colleagues have for using spreadsheets instead of Salesforce;
  • initiative by a new team member to "make Salesforce just like I had at my previous job;" or
  • Salesforce project to onboard a new division, business unit or process..

in the way outlined below, you will be able to keep stakeholders engaged, and take control of the situation to get the results you need.
