How to Stop Being the Best-Kept Secret

How to Stop Being the Best-Kept Secret

Got a question for you...

Are you the best-kept secret in your field?

If you have a speaking gig, a signature talk, or a podcast that you've been recorded on, you need to let the world know! This is where promotion, the 9th pillar of influential communication, becomes critical.

At?From Page to Stage, we specialise in helping authors get on stages and spread their messages. Podcasts are an incredible avenue for this. If you’re published, about to be published, or even just pondering the idea, it’s time to strategise about how you’re going to promote your work. And here’s the kicker: you need to start NOW.

Why Promotion Is Essential

If you have something important to say—whether it’s a program, a talk, or your message—you must share it with a wider audience. How will people know about it if you don’t promote it? This concept might seem elementary, but you'd be surprised how many brilliant people still struggle with the art of self-promotion. This is the topic in my YT live last week:

Reverse Engineering Your Promotion

Here’s a tip: work backward from your publication date. Whether it’s a book release, a TEDx talk, or a podcast appearance, reverse engineering can help you plan an effective marketing campaign.

  1. Timeline Planning:?Some podcasts publish the same week that they record, a few are streamed live, but this is rare. Generally, there’s a lag between recording and publication. I recently did a podcast that's not going out until October, even though we’re recording in August. So, if you have a specific date in mind, think about that and when you need to start promoting.
  2. Excite Your Audience:?Share your excitement with your audience. If you have a podcast episode coming up, take a screenshot during the recording and post it on social media. Make a live video talking about how thrilled you are, and be sure to tag the host. This not only builds anticipation but also shows the host that you’re serious about promotion, making them more likely to invite you back.
  3. Consistency Is Key:?Don’t rely on a one-and-done approach. Algorithms won’t always work in your favour, so you need to keep your audience updated regularly. Repurpose your content. For instance, I got really excited about speaking at Cambridge University recently. When the video gets posted, I’ll share snippets and trailers on all my social media platforms to keep the momentum going.
  4. Leverage Networking Opportunities:?Get onto networking calls and speaker directories. Some speaker bureaus can even secure paid gigs for you, though they generally come at a premium.

Capture and Share Every Opportunity

Always make sure your speaking engagements are recorded. Good audio quality is crucial, and visuals with an audience in the background build social proof. Encourage your friends or colleagues to take videos if the event organisers don’t. This may not always be possible with good quality sound, however the visuals are good social proof in and of themselves.

By persistently promoting your talks, podcasts, and publications, you create a buzz that people want to be part of. This excitement is contagious and can significantly boost your visibility and influence.

Final Thoughts

Promotion is not just about talking about your upcoming projects; it's about creating a consistent and engaging narrative that draws people in.

Have an awesome week ahead!
