“Do one thing every day that scares you” - Mary Schmich
In uncertain times, it can be easy to cruise along within your comfort zone; putting yourself out there into unfamiliar territory is scary. You will read countless articles on why you should eliminate that fear and challenge yourself to try something new to improve your performance at work. We know that upskilling ourselves will revamp our career and revitalize our passion for work….. But what I want to talk about is HOW!
How can you expose yourself to new tasks or skills when every fibre of your being is shying away from putting your hand up or stepping forwards for this unknown challenge?
1. Research
To make the first step in breaking through your comfort zone you need to research the new skill you want to master or the new job you desire. Read books, listen to podcasts, research online, speak to people who already have this skill.
2. Plan
You have set yourself a goal; now you need to write a step-by-step plan as to how you will achieve it. Breaking your goal down into micro-goals will feel so much more manageable and achievable. By starting small you can build the confidence to take that first step and gradually build up your tolerance for the unknown.
3. What’s the Worst That Could Happen?
Mentally prepare yourself for rejection by thinking through the worst case scenarios: you mess up a meeting, you stumble over a presentation, your sales pitch is rejected, you aren’t offered that new job…. There will be countless steps along the way where you will receive a negative outcome, your confidence will be shaken and you may want to give up. Don't take the knocks to heart, learn to see rejection as a chance to regroup and refocus.
4. Put Yourself Out There
One of the quickest ways to get outside your comfort zone at work is simply to ask to take on a new responsibility. Put your hand up! Step forwards! Share your goal with your manager, you will be surprised by how supportive they will be to your desire to further yourself.
5. Keep Going!
The US Navy SEALs have a saying, “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” By pushing yourself to take regular steps outside your comfort zone you will be able to handle whatever situations come along in your life. Once you start pushing yourself, it will feel easier each time.
6. Don’t Go it Alone
It’s a lot easier to step outside your comfort zone when you’re not going it alone. Apply for a leadership or accelerator program at work, find a mentor, follow inspirational leaders on LinkedIn or join a networking community of like minded peers.
7. Keep Expanding your Comfort Zone
You will have discovered a lot about yourself in this process: resilience, tenacity and hopefully a new skill that you love. Now it’s time to go back to step 1 and set yourself your next challenge!
In the comment box below, I would love to hear your thoughts about what you’ve done to push past your fears and break out of your comfort zone.
