When things get chaotic at work, how can you stay focused on your goals and priorities?

What the Experts Say

  • Navigating turbulence at work is an inevitable part of professional life, but it doesn't mean you have to surrender to it. If you approach the chaos with an open mind and a measure of resilience, it might even have some upside for your career.
  • Change at work can be disorienting, so allow yourself to feel your feelings. It's normal not to feel normal for a while, so give yourself permission to be in survival mode, at least temporarily.
  • In the immediate aftermath of upheaval, take a purposeful pause and consider what could make you and what could break you. This perspective fosters resilience and helps you shift from a defensive mindset of self-protection to fostering a growth mindset that embraces new possibilities.
  • When things are hairy at work, it's good to have strong work relationships so you can decompress with colleagues. Still, be careful about what you say to colleagues, and resist the urge to post about work chaos on social media.
  • Be positive and opportunistic. You might find a silver lining to the turmoil happening at work, so keep an open mind and ask yourself three questions: How do these changes affect my current position, how do I view the organization and/or my future in the organization, and what opportunities arise?
  • Stay objective, and don't lose sight of the bigger picture. If your organization's approach raises concerns, consider whether you're in the right place, and whether work feels less like a constant whiplash.
  • The chaos and tumult of a new job might be the push you need to reevaluate your current position and consider what you want out of your career.

Principles to Remember

Give yourself permission to feel overwhelmed and unsure amid the chaos. Seek support from family and friends and consider new opportunities.
