How To Stay Focused as An Entrepreneur

How To Stay Focused as An Entrepreneur

If you want to be SUCCESSFUL in today’s hectic world, you need to be able to stay focused as an entrepreneur, because success is more about energy than intelligence.

Lack of ENERGY reduces our FOCUS, which makes it harder for us to CONCENTRATE on what really matters the most in business, which reduces the RESULTS we get from the time we invest in our work.

Energy = focus

Concentrated effort = results

I know what you’re going say – Hey Chris, there’s no way energy trumps intelligence in the business world!

But it does – every time.

Even the most successful, intelligent entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Jeff Bezos didn’t win because they were smart. They won because their intelligence was backed by an energy that not only kept them driving forward even in the toughest times, but an energy that was contagious and infected all those on their team.

I can name a half dozen people who I’ve spoken with this week alone that are not massively intelligent but they’re very successful:

·????????They’re millionaire entrepreneurs

·????????They’ve successfully built multiple businesses in the mid-8 figures

·????????They have healthy families who they spend a lot of time with

·????????And they’re happy, meaning they’re doing things they enjoy, and making memories and helping others

NOT because of the books they’ve read, or because of some secrets they know, but because they have the energy to keep moving forward, even in tough times.

And I want to share with you exactly how we do this.

Think about this…

How much more would you be able to accomplish if you had 50% more energy?

How about double the energy?

And how much happier would you be in your life in general if you didn’t feel drained and unfocused at the end of your day?

Well our ability to FOCUS is directly related to our ENERGY level. And the number one drain on your energy is not what you ate for breakfast, or how much you’ve been exercising this month. Yes those things have a place, and I’ll talk about that in just a moment, but the #1 drain on your energy is…

…mental frustration, confusion, and disappointment.

It’s when an employee is not performing at their best, and a novice business owner allows that to stress them out.

That drains the owner of both mental and physical energy, and it’s not the underperforming employee that brings the company down…

…it’s the lack of energy in the owner that makes them unfocused, that winds up bringing the company down that day.

Or it’s the author who gets writer’s block, and that frustration of not being able to figure out what to write - drains them so much that they end their day exhausted.

Or it’s the lack of sales during a promotion, or the stress of having to make payroll, that drains your energy. And that lack of energy makes it harder for you to make smart decisions that could turn around that promotion, or to think outside the box to grow the company so you don’t have payroll problems next week.

Most entrepreneurs, at one time or another suffer from emotional exhaustion, and they don’t even know it’s happening. They just feel less and less focused.

And if this happens to you (and you’re a small business owner) your sales will drop QUICKLY.

…or if you’re in a mid-size company, and you’re the leader, then your lack of energy will come across to your team, and no matter how great of a leader you were in the past, you’re team will begin perceiving you as less of a leader because people are drawn to those who exude energy.

Not, “I do jumping jacks all day” kind of energy, and not “I just drank 10 cups of coffee” energy, but that fast moving yet calm, energy and focus that great leaders have. That comes across as confidence.

And there’s two sides of the coin that, as entrepreneurs, you need to understand...

And I’m going to give you both of those right now, and before I do, if you have a questions for me, make sure you comment below because I do look at the questions, and it very possibly can become the topic of one of my future articles.

Ok, now to regain your focus and to get ahead in your week, we first need to AVOID ENERGY VAMPIRES (the things that literally suck the energy out of you) like: negative people, and negative conversation…

…yes, you might need to have tough conversations (at times) about things like poor sales or poor performance. But when you train yourself and your team to spend 20% of your time mapping out the problem, then 80% of your time getting crystal clear on the solution… your energy will soar, and your focus will be ONLY on the action that will lead to success, which means your results will be substantially better.

Another energy vampire is: long, drawn out, written communications. I used to get sucked into one sentence inside of an email or text, and I’d re-read it and try to make it perfect before sending it out (which took a long time and it was time I didn’t have, so at the end of the day I hadn’t gotten everything else done, which drained my energy and messed up my focus). Now I live by a rule when creating ANY written communication, and that’s that if I can’t finish a sentence, then that sentence probably doesn’t belong.

And instead of getting stuck on perfecting that one sentence, I delete it and then read the email (or text, or whatever) and almost always, it’s perfect without that one line in it.

Most people get stuck on that one line in life… and it’s a time suck and an energy drain!

And it’s costing you far more than you might imagine.

Other energy vampires that drain our mental and physical energy are things like:

Eating sugary foods

sitting for too long

drinking alcohol

drinking too much caffeine, because your body gets used to coffee or caffeine after a while and keeps requiring more in order to perform even at your least effective state.

And there’s more, but I don’t want this to turn into a health rant, which I can do very easily because I have a very deep background in health, but if you want me to focus on health in an upcoming article, just tell me I the comments and I’ll gladly do that!

But the other side of the coin here, is knowing how to easily fill your energy reserves and keep them full all day.

And this could be another long list, but I’m going to give you the top things that have been proven to work to:

-?????????KEEP YOUR BRAIN SHARP

-?????????and FOCUSED

-?????????and YOUR ENERGY HIGH.

And these are all things I do in my life. And they include things as simple as:

Drinking Tea: and although I don’t particularly like the taste of tea, I drink some every day because it increases my cognitive performance, especially when I drink green tea, or ginger or turmeric or yerba mate or matcha, or more often, a combination of all of them.

So my morning almost always looks like this…

I wake up between 5 or 6 depending on my schedule that day, and drink a 20 ounce glass of water because at night your brain and your body became dehydrated, so since I want my brain to be firing on all cylinders from the start, I begin every day with a glass of water, then I workout, and while I’m exercising I’ll drink a cold cup of tea, then I have a healthy breakfast and I jump into a cold shower, and then I get started with my day.

All of those things: a healthy breakfast, a cold shower, exercise, and tea, all help to strengthen every cell in your body so your energy is high when you start your day.

And during the day, successful entrepreneurs know they need to:

-?????????stay hydrated

-?????????and stay active

-?????????and stay fed with healthy foods

But even if you get all this right, if you constantly think about negative things your energy will get zapped and so will your focus.

So yes, eat right and exercise, but most importantly, give yourself short breaks throughout the day to:

-?????????be grateful for what you’ve achieved so far

-?????????and to celebrate your WINS – even if they’re small wins

-?????????and to talk with positive people

All of those things are like recharging your mental energy and fortifying your focus.

Because more than anything else, your success in business is determined by your ability to keep focused on moving forward towards your target, and what you’ll find is that your best years are always those where you were the most mentally engaged.

And that means avoiding energy vampires and doing a few things to add energy into your life.

It’s not hard, in fact it’s more about PERSISTENCE then PERFECTION.

Do a few things to boost your focus and do them persistently, and the results you get in business and in life will begin to amaze you.

Because small shifts like we talked about today will make a BIG DIFFERENCE in your margin, and your profits, and in your life.

Negative people. People who focus on problems instead of solutions. Negative, round-about, non-solution-producing conversations. Just people and things that pull us in other directions.
