So, you want to start a YouTube channel? As a photographer and award-winning TV editor, I know a thing or two about visual storytelling, and I'm here to help you get started.
But before we dive in, let me ask you a question: Are you ready to show the world what you've got? If the answer is yes, then let's get started!
Step 1: Define your niche
The first step in starting a YouTube channel is to define your niche. What kind of videos do you want to create? Are you a foodie looking to share your favorite recipes? A beauty enthusiast with makeup tutorials to share? Or maybe you're a travel junkie with a knack for storytelling? Whatever your niche, make sure it's something you're passionate about and that you have plenty of ideas for content.
Step 2: Develop a content strategy
Once you've defined your niche, it's time to develop a content strategy. This means thinking about the types of videos you want to create, how often you'll post, and how to promote your channel. As a photographer, I suggest incorporating visuals into your videos as much as possible. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, right?
Step 3: Create and optimize your channel
Now it's time to create and optimize your channel. This means choosing a channel name, creating a logo and banner, and filling out your channel description. Make sure your branding is consistent across all your social media platforms to help build brand recognition.
If you need help creating your banner at the proper pixel size, simply look to Google to find a "YouTube Banner Template." Or, you can DM me and I'll be happy to send you my template.
Step 4: Plan and produce your videos
With your channel set up, it's time to plan and produce your videos. Think about your content strategy and plan out your videos in advance. This will help you stay organized and consistent. When it comes to production, don't worry too much about having the best equipment. Focus on creating great content that resonates with your audience.
A quiet location with a large window and any modern cell phone is all you need. Stand as close to the window as possible and face outside for the most flattering light possible. Your cell phone has built-in noise cancelling tech, so it should sound great, even if you have a ceiling fan or air conditioning turned on.
Three point lighting systems can be purchased at a relatively inexpensive cost, and will allow you to shoot during night time or days where sunlight is not available. It would be a wise investment.

Of course, if you can justify the cost, a DSLR or mirrorless camera would make your videos look more professional. There are special considerations to keep in mind if you want to use a pro-level camera.
DSLR and Mirrorless Camera Considerations:
All of these add significant extra expenses. A good lens can often cost as much, or more, than the camera body. Beware of how all these can add up quickly.
Step 5: Promote your channel
Finally, it's time to promote your channel. Share your videos on social media, collaborate with other YouTubers in your niche, and engage with your audience. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new things. I've found that humor is a great way to connect with my audience and build engagement.
When using humor, however, be certain that you're not in danger of marginalizing or diminishing others at the expense of your comedy. Unless, of course, you intentionally want to do that. And if you do want to do that, I won't be subscribing to your channel. ??
In conclusion, starting a YouTube channel takes time, effort, and a lot of creativity. But if you're passionate about your niche and willing to put in the work, the rewards can be huge. So grab your camera (or smartphone), and start creating!
I hope this post helps you get started on your journey to YouTube stardom! Remember, have fun with it and don't be afraid to be yourself. Good luck!
Who knows, maybe you'll be the next big YouTube star.
