How to Start Over

Starting over can feel like the most daunting challenge in the world, or it can feel liberating and exciting.
I have had to start over quite a few times in my life:
* After my divorce
* After being made redundant (laid off) - 3 times
* After moving countries - 5 times
* After starting to write my first book - about 20 times!
The mixed emotions when starting over on something important can be confusing:
* On the one hand, you may feel like you have failed, so you feel disappointed, depressed, angry or even ashamed
* On the other hand, you may be relieved that the situation preceding the change is over, so once you deal with any of the emotions above, you feel open and optimistic
What about the project that you started in the past but never finished? It doesn't seem as dramatic as a huge life change, but it is just as important and requires even more courage.
In fact, it takes even more courage to start over on a personal project when it's something you are choosing to do, rather than something you are being forced to do.
The new year always feels to me like a chance to start something anew. We have a fresh new page in the calendar - in fact, we have a brand-new calendar!
Whatever has happened during the past year or years that we are not happy with or that didn't get done the way we wanted, we can wipe the slate clean and make a new start.
Starting over requires the right mindset, and you can have a better outcomes if you do the following things:
* Check in with yourself to see if that goal is still important to you
* If you still want to succeed, forgive yourself for anything you need to (such as giving up the first time, thinking you have failed, making derogatory comments about yourself in your mind or to other people)
* Explore different approaches from last time, or the same approach with a different mindset if you feel more empowered now

* Give yourself a pat on the back for being braver than the average person, and another pat on the back for having another go
* Maintain a gracious and grateful approach as you continue the journey, and stay aware of your emotions at all times, so you don't fall into the same traps as last time
As a coach for 30+ years, I have heard many stories from many people who were going after their dreams and goals, sometimes multiple times. Even having a dream or goal puts you in the minority. Doing something about it is even rarer. And having the courage to start over is the rarest quality of all.
As a specialist coach in nonfiction book writing, I have a deep understanding of the effort, challenges and rewards that pertain to writing a book, especially a book about one's personal experience.
So let's talk about that book.
If you have started a book project in the past but you didn't make the progress you wanted for whatever reason, or life simply got in the way, you are not alone! Did you read how many times I re-started my book?? I didn't actually have a coach so I went around and around and around...
My new 90-day group program for aspiring authors starts on January 3rd
That's?next Tuesday?by the way - one week from today!
The program also includes?10 progress sessions?over?90 days
It will be 100% live with me teaching and coaching you, and it's all virtual, so you can sit in the comfort of your own home or office and get your entire book planned and written by the end March!
Yes, we are starting?NEXT TUESDAY. That's the best way to "Get it Done in Q1". So don't deliberate too long or you'll miss it. And it's probably the only time I'm running this in 2023.
BONUS!?If you have started a book in the past but have not followed through or finished it, I have great news for you. If you let me know you are starting over, I will give you a?bonus private session?with me during the first week of the program! We will discuss the emotions as well as some practical tips to help you be successful this time.
It's normal to have doubts and concerns when you are doing something important. I have supported over 1000 authors who had those same questions, and they all discovered that they were able to write really great books - with my help and process.?
This is what Richard Morris FRSA M.Eng C.Eng , Founder of The Giving Machine, said about my group coaching program
There is a place for you in the January program if you want it.
If you are ready to?start your book?or?start over...the program is starting?NEXT TUESDAY.?
I loved this article and the timing was great thanks

2 年I agree 100% with you Mindy. Have a goal worth failing for is admirable. Taking action to achieve a massive goal is more effective.
