How to Get Noticed by Recruiters in the Competitive Tech Job Market
The Dow Jones may be at an all-time high and national unemployment may be at an all-time low, but finding a job in the tech sector is harder than ever before. After the Dow Jones took a big dip in October 2022, hundreds of thousands of software company employees were laid off, unfortunately. And software companies continue to lay employees off even today!
This resulted in an absolutely massive supply of tech industry talent making competition for jobs very difficult. People looking for tech jobs get their LinkedIn Jobs email alert and when they click on job listings they are a fit for, LinkedIn shows the job is already closed for further applications or over 100 others have already applied. I posted a Senior Data Scientist job on LinkedIn and in about five days had over 700 applicants for it!
Based on my experience as an internal recruiter at software companies, here are the ways I'll notice your application early on. Candidates early in the process have a HUGE advantage over later candidates.
1. Email Your Resume to the Recruiter Directly
Recruiters get a ton of emails and need to keep their inbox under control. For every person that does Easy Apply for one of our job postings on LinkedIn, I get an email. I simply do a search and archive all those. That leaves the direct email applicants who will be reviewed first!
Tip: When emailing your resume, make sure your subject line is clear and concise, such as "Experienced Data Scientist Application – [Your Name]." This helps your email stand out in the recruiter's crowded inbox.
2. Leverage Internal Employee Referrals
If you have a 1st-degree connection at the employer, ask them to do an internal employee referral. Employee-referred candidates always get VIP attention and will be expedited through the candidate process.
Tip: Be proactive in building your professional network. Attend industry events, participate in relevant online forums, and connect with employees at companies you’re interested in.
3. DM Your Resume and Cover Letter to the Job Poster on LinkedIn
Like direct emails to recruiters, we like to keep our LinkedIn Messages under control as well and address them as they come in. By directly messaging your resume and cover letter to the person posting the job on LinkedIn, you can ensure your application gets noticed.
Tip: Personalize your message to the job poster. Mention why you’re excited about the role and how your skills and experience make you a perfect fit.

4. Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile
Recruiters often use LinkedIn to search for potential candidates. Make sure your profile is up-to-date, showcases your skills and experience, and includes a professional photo.
Tip: Use keywords relevant to the job you’re targeting. This increases the likelihood that your profile will appear in search results when recruiters are looking for candidates.
5. Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter
Generic resumes and cover letters are easily overlooked. Customize your resume and cover letter for each job application, highlighting the skills and experiences most relevant to the position.
Tip: Use specific examples and quantifiable achievements to demonstrate your impact in previous roles. This makes your application more compelling and memorable.
6. Stay Active and Engaged in Your Field
Contributing to industry blogs, participating in webinars, and engaging with relevant content on social media can help you build a strong professional presence and network.
Tip: Share your insights and expertise on platforms like LinkedIn. This not only showcases your knowledge but also keeps you on the radar of recruiters and industry professionals.
7. Follow Up After Applying
A polite follow-up email or message can remind the recruiter of your application and demonstrate your genuine interest in the role.
Tip: Wait about a week after submitting your application before following up. Keep your message brief and reiterate your enthusiasm for the position.
By implementing these strategies, you can increase your chances of getting noticed by recruiters and securing your next role in the tech industry. Good luck!
