How to Stand Out on LinkedIn

If you're reading this article, you're on the platform. You may even be a candidate who is open to new opportunities. So how do you better position your profile so that you stand out to Recruiters? It's a question I have been asked more and more lately. In fact, I was speaking to an MBA class two weeks ago and this question came up there too. The reality is that a few tweaks to your profile and your approach on LinkedIn, could help you land that job.

  1. Connections - the more you have, the better. Depending on the version of LinkedIn Recruiter that Recruiters are using, they can only search for a certain number of connections. It all depends on who they are connected with and who that person is connected with. Therefore, the more people you are connected with, the better chance you will have of being seen. In addition, people post jobs on LinkedIn. Again, the more people you are connected with, the better chance you will have of seeing that job posting.
  2. Key Words - Recruiters search for these. Fill your profile up with them and you will be seen.
  3. Accomplishments - I love seeing these. Often, key word searches can bring up a list of say 100 candidates that I could message. I still need to find a way to narrow that list. When someone lists accomplishments, it not only tells me that they have done our job but it tells me that they have done it successfully.
  4. Flair/Originality - be different. Use emoji's, speak about your interests, use some colour! I often find myself drawn to profiles that are different in some way because others can often blend together. It also makes me think that because that person has put a lot of effort into their profile, they might be more prone to reply to my message.
  5. Activity - be active. Post about something or interact with someone else's post. Network with people based on your interests or based on a job that has been posted by someone. The more active you are, the more connections, the more conversations, the better chance you have of being seen.
