How to Stand Out in the Cannabis Job Market: Tips from a Dispensary Operations Manager
The cannabis industry is growing rapidly, and with it comes a growing demand for qualified professionals. If you're looking to get a job in the cannabis retail industry, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of getting hired. Andrew Croan, experienced operator in cannabis recently shared his thoughts during an AMA Cannabis Career Event hosted by EzHire Cannabis.
Develop an excellent cover letter
Your cover letter is your chance to make a first impression on a potential employer. Take the time to write a well-written and informative cover letter that highlights your skills and experience, as well as your passion for the cannabis industry.
Cannabis is unique and I don't think that you necessarily need to have any specific set of skills to work in a retail environment. It can be trained, Most people haven't worked in cannabis. So 1st, 1st and most important I think is developing an excellent cover letter.
Be yourself
The cannabis industry is a unique industry, and it's important to be yourself when you're applying for a job. Don't try to be someone you're not, because employers will be able to tell. Be genuine and authentic, and let your personality shine through in your application materials.
We wanna know more about who you are than what you've done. I want to know that you have morals and values and skills and that you are a team player and this is a community.
I also want to know that you can be trained and that you can listen and take direction.
What you've done in your previous career may or may not apply in a retail environment. So we I'd say a lot of people hiring at a retail level may be looking to know more about who you are than what you've done.

Be knowledgeable about cannabis
Even if you don't have any formal experience in the cannabis industry, it's important to be knowledgeable about cannabis products and the cannabis plant. Do your research and learn as much as you can about the industry. This will show potential employers that you're serious about the job and that you're committed to learning more about the industry.
Legacy is not too big of an issue, I think there's a whole lot of value to that.
If you can know what the average price of a pound is in your area, if you can say you've been out to California and trimmed through Croptober, if you know what rosin is or how it's made, if you know what the consumption of tincture does and the onset of it because you've been making it…
All of those things are really valuable and I think it's worth creating two resumes and sending that legacy information along to the cannabis positions.
Be presentable
I think in this industry especially, make it sound professional. You want to clean it up. You don't want to say you were flipping Z’s on the corner with your boys. Find a nicer way to clean it up and, and make it a little bit more presentable.
Conclusion
By following these tips, you can increase your chances of getting a job in the cannabis industry and start your career in this exciting and growing field.
