How to spot your idea and sell it too
Two books I strongly recommend

How to spot your idea and sell it too

I think I bought both these books 10 years ago. Both books written by Sam Harrison,

Here is the contents page for IdeaSpotting:

Nobody spots hot ideas in cold offices - SO WHY SIT THERE?

Explore ranges OF POSSIBILITY

What you see is WHAT YOU GET

Listening 101: close mouth. OPEN EARS

Ask the question, play the fool. Don't ask the question STAY THE FOOL

Know what makes your audience LAUGH, CRY SCREAM

If an idea pops up, write it down. If a vision drifts SKETCH IT OUT

17 topics in all. Invaluable tips and advice.

Let us come to IdeaSelling:

Here are a few topics:

How to deal with DECISION MAKERS

Begin by boosting YOUR BELIEVABILITY

Learn by asking ALL THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Find out what clients want BY LISTENING

Success = Opportunity + PREPARATION

How to present a A POWERFUL PITCH

How to handle OBJECTIONS

and the it is FOLLOW-UP AND MORE

I used to refer to these two books every time I was designing a workshop for a client. Just to escape my own sameness trap. I have been going through these for the last one week to soak myself before writing this piece.

In 360 DEGREE EXPLORING Sam has put together a superb list of things that surround us and can become triggers or sources of ideas.

Look at this list:

  • Personal surroundings
  • Peers
  • Print media
  • Food
  • Entertainment
  • Hard Data
  • Strangers
  • Internet
  • History
  • Nature
  • Venues (before social distancing days)
  • Competitors
  • Transportation
  • Retailers
  • Customers/Clients
  • Idea Masters
  • Kids
  • Friends
  • Science & Biology

This is just one example.

When I see the two books again - it was like meeting two old friends. My current project is to explore how to adapt Sam's suggestions to online brainstorming.

Not easy. But not impossible either. May be some of Sam's ideas can help me crack this challenge.

Go ahead spot your ideas. And sell them too.

Thanks, Sridhar for sharing. Sound very practical. I use snippets from Andy Boynton's Idea Hunting video (from my Stanford library) in my Entrepreneurship class. I think his book was co-authored with Bill Fisher.
