How to spot the difference between and elf and a troll and how to deal with one!
You may never have seen an elf, but I bet you've seen a troll.
Here's how to recognise one:
???? They leave a nasty comment on one of your posts - it's not constructive criticism.
???? Their own profile is not well optimised - they may even be hiding their true image behind a cartoon avatar or a logo
???? Their own posts are unimaginative, salesy, gaining next to no likes or comments
???? Their activity feed shows that they have spent quite a bit of time trawling LinkedIn to spew their unhelpful and judgemental comments on other people's posts
???? Due to the above - they can't have enough work coming in to keep them otherwise engaged.
???? They appear to know, although there is no such written rule, what you should post on Facebook/what belongs on LinkedIn.
???? They don't understand that good relationship building is what networking is about - online and offline
???? They don't realise that in leaving crappy comments on your post they are boosting your visibility and making themselves look bad.
Here's how you could deal with one....
???? Never stoop to their level with a nasty exchange of words
???? Delete their comment OR grab popcorn and watch other people take them to task - thereby boosting your post further.
???? Consider whether they would have attacked you had the message in your post been clearer. If so, thank them for pointing out that you could have made yourself clearer and that you have amended your post to that effect. If you DON'T tell them you've amended your post they will attack you for not pointing this out - as if you are trying to hide the fact.
???? Above all, don't take it personally. They are unhappy people and what they do reflects badly on THEM - not you.

4 年I had trolls that got so abusive I had to go to the police But yesterday I saw trolls launch a targeted attack on someone I know and I really felt for them. It's clear it was an organised attack when the people attacking were competitors and way outside their local network
